Remember when they let you use that free iPad at the airport, you're being played

Travel without a handheld device? Heaven forbid.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that metro airports are finally getting around to upgrading boarding areas for travelers. At New York?s LaGuardia Airport, for example, ?boarding gate areas have recently been renovated with plentiful power outlets and iPads for free use.?

There?s just nothing like whiling away ?time on a computer, scrambling from one site to another, dutifully ripping off comments and responses, in general, being busy ? and, above all, looking busy. By the way, how much reading material do you need?

Who paid for the digital makeover? The sponsor was the concession company that runs the airport restaurants, a firm that must believe that when you keep people busy, they?re more likely to eat and drink. After all, Internet commercials are no less wily than their TV brethren.

If you get people distracted and you?ve got a captive audience, chances are they?ll buy what you?re selling -- and just keep right on punching those buttons. The WSJ article makes note of how a cheeseburger and fries is available via the loaner iPad for $17. Now if somebody is going to pay almost $20 for a burger and fries, I?d provide them with an iPad, too.

But it?s not all just terminal illness. While noting that ?the gate improvement movement was in its infancy,? the Journal article did point to other amenities going in at some airports such as seats that actually offer comfort to weary wanderers. Dallas-Fort Worth was even adding foldout foot rests for napping.

There?s probably not a lot of money in providing a relaxing place to sit but that seems like a better way to start a vacation than furiously foraging for data.
