Starbucks veteran Michelle Gass leaving for Kohl's

(Reuters) - Starbucks Corp executive Michelle Gass, who was instrumental in the world's biggest coffee chain's post-recession U.S. turnaround, is leaving after more than 16 years to become chief customer officer at retailer Kohl's Corp .

Gass, known for having led many big initiatives at Starbucks, including the development of Frappuccino blended drinks, will join Kohl's in the newly created position on June 17, the low-price department store said on Wednesday.

Gass had just been named to a new position at Starbucks, where she was set to work directly with Chairman and Chief Executive Howard Schultz. Most recently, she was president for Starbucks Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"The news should be viewed as disappointing to investors as Gass was highly regarded, having helped create the overall strategic blueprint for the brand," said Barclays analyst Jeffrey Bernstein.

He added that Gass has been a director at Ann Inc , the parent of women's clothing chain Ann Taylor, since November 2008.

"We value her many contributions over the years," Starbucks spokesman Jim Olson said, adding that Wednesday was Gass' last day at the Seattle-based company.

At Kohl's, Gass will oversee areas such as marketing and e-commerce, and will report directly to Chairman and CEO Kevin Mansell.

Before she joined Starbucks, Gass worked in marketing and new product development with Procter & Gamble Co .

Starbucks shares closed down 0.2 percent at $64.14, while Kohl's ended down 0.5 percent at $52.08.

Moon hit by boulder-size meteoroid, causing 'explosion' visible from earth (+video)

If you had been looking up at the moon at the right moment on March 17, you could have seen a one-second burst of heat caused by the impact of a large meteoroid.

No telescope required.

?For about one second, the impact site was glowing like a 4th magnitude star,? NASA said in reporting the news Friday.

This meteoroid was the size of a small boulder, and was travelling very fast. NASA estimates the size at 0.3 to 0.4 meters wide, and the speed at 56,000 m.p.h.?

The resulting explosion? delivered a force equal to 5 tons of TNT.

NASA puts a footnote on the word ?explosion.? The bright light wasn?t combustion, since the moon has no oxygen atmosphere. Rather, it was the glow of molten rock and hot vapors after an impact of large kinetic force.

That said, this was the biggest such ?explosion? in eight years of close monitoring of the moon?s surface.

And it?s not that meteoroids on the lunar surface are rare.

The moon lacks a protective atmosphere like Earth?s, in which meteoroids typically burn up. Lunar meteor showers have turned out to be more common than expected, with hundreds of detectable impacts per year.

On March 17, the pyrotechnics on the moon coincided with an active night for meteors in Earth?s atmosphere as well.

NASA?s Space Exploration Policy eventually calls for extended astronaut stays on the moon, so tracking meteor activity has long-term relevance.

?Identifying the sources of lunar meteors and measuring their impact rates gives future lunar explorers an idea of what to expect,? the space agency said in announcing the bright explosion Friday. ?Is it safe to go on a moonwalk, or not?? The middle of March might be a good time to stay inside.??

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A wave of attacks killed at least 95 people in Shiite and Sunni areas of Iraq on Monday, officials said, pushing the death toll over the past week to more than 240 and extending one of the most sustained bouts of sectarian violence the country has seen in years.

The bloodshed is still far shy of the pace, scale and brutality of the dark days of 2006-2007, when Sunni and Shiite militias carried out retaliatory attacks against each other in a cycle of violence that left the country awash in blood. Still, Monday's attacks, some of which hit markets and crowded bus stops during the morning rush hour, have heightened fears that the country could be turning back down the path toward civil war.

Sectarian tensions have been worsening since Iraq's minority Sunnis began protesting what they say is mistreatment at the hands of the Shiite-led government. The mass demonstrations, which began in December, have largely been peaceful, but the number of attacks rose sharply after a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in northern Iraq on April 23.

Iraq's Shiite majority, which was oppressed under the late dictator Saddam Hussein, now holds the levers of power in the country. Wishing to rebuild the nation rather than revert to open warfare, they have largely restrained their militias over the past five years or so as Sunni extremist groups such as al-Qaida have targeted them with occasional large-scale attacks.

But the renewed violence in both Shiite and Sunni areas since late last month has fueled concerns of a return to sectarian warfare. Monday marked the deadliest day in Iraq in more than 20 months, and raised the nationwide death toll since last Wednesday alone to more than 240 people, according to an AP count.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki accused militant groups of trying to exploit Iraq's political instability to exacerbate sectarian tensions at home, and blamed the recent spike in violence on the wider unrest in the region, particularly in neighboring Syria. At the same time, he pledged Monday that insurgents "will not be able to bring back the atmosphere of the sectarian war."

Many Sunnis here contend that much of the country's current turmoil is rooted in decisions made by al-Maliki's government, saying his administration planted the seeds for more sectarian tension by becoming more aggressive toward Sunnis after the U.S. military withdrawal in December 2011.

The worst of Monday's violence took place in Baghdad, where 10 car bombs ripped through open-air markets and other areas of Shiite neighborhoods, killing at least 48 people and wounding more than 150, police officials said. In the bloodiest attack, a parked car bomb blew up in a busy market in the northern Shiite neighborhood of Shaab, killing 14 and wounding 24, police and health officials said.

The surge in bloodshed has exasperated Iraqis, who have lived for years with the fear and uncertainty bred of random violence.

"How long do we have to continue living like this, with all the lies from the government?" asked 23-year-old Baghdad resident Malik Ibrahim. "Whenever they say they have reached a solution, the bombings come back stronger than before."

"We're fed up with them and we can't tolerate this anymore," he added.

The predominantly Shiite city of Basra in southern Iraq was also hit Monday, with two car bombs there ? one outside a restaurant and another at the city's main bus station ? killing at least 13 and wounded 40, according to provincial police spokesman Col. Abdul-Karim al-Zaidi and the head of city's health directorate, Riadh Abdul-Amir.

A parked car bomb later struck Shiite worshippers as they were leaving a mosque in the southern city of Hillah, killing nine and wounding 26, according to police and health officials said.

In the town of Balad, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad, a car bomb exploded next to a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims, killing 13 Iranians and one Iraqi, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but the fact that they all occurred in Shiite areas raised the suspicion that Sunni militants were involved. Also, Sunni insurgents, particularly al-Qaida in Iraq, are known to employ such large-scale bombings.

Monday's violence also struck Sunni areas, hitting the city of Samarra north of Baghdad and the western province of Anbar, a Sunni stronghold and the birthplace of the protest movement.

A parked car bomb in Samarra went off near a gathering of pro-government Sunni militia who were waiting outside a military base to receive salaries, killing three and wounding 13, while in Anbar gunmen ambushed two police patrols near the town of Haditha, killing eight policemen, police and army officials said.

Also in Anbar, authorities found 13 bodies dumped in a remote desert area, officials said. The bodies, which included eight policemen who were kidnapped by gunmen on Friday, had been killed with a gunshot to the head.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Bamboo Loop: A Fun, Creative Twist on Everyday Picture Messaging

Wacom may be best known for their styluses and tablets, but there's also a more whimsical side to the company that comes with their Bamboo line of apps. And the newest release, Bamboo Loop, carries on that tradition with a delightfully creative photo sharing app.

What does it do?

Lets you import your own images, which you can then either use your finger or a stylus to scribble all over to your heart's content. Plus, you can browse different backgrounds, photo shapes, patterns, and (the now practically required) filters. You then get to share your creation over a variety of social media?or for a more personal touch, directly to a friend.

Why do we like it?

Yes, it's nearly impossible to open the app store without at least eight different photo editing programs being thrown at you, but Bamboo Loop benefits greatly from a company that knows what its doing. The app is clean, simple to use, and makes it easy create adorable custom photographs that look like they took far more time and effort than they actually did. The really great thing here, though, is that, when someone sends you a photo, you can create a "loop," endlessly sending a picture back and forth until its barely recognizable. It's a fun little twist on something that's become essentially commonplace.

Panel: Apple uses firms outside US to avoid taxes

(AP) ? Apple Inc. employs a group of affiliate companies located outside the United States to avoid paying billions of dollars in U.S. income taxes, a Senate investigation has found.

The world's most valuable company is holding overseas some $102 billion of its $145 billion in cash, and an Irish subsidiary that earned $22 billion in 2011 paid only $10 million in taxes, according to the report issued Monday by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

The strategies Apple uses are legal, and many other multinational corporations use similar tax techniques to avoid paying U.S. income taxes on profits they reap overseas. But Apple uses a unique twist, the report found. The company's tactics raise questions about loopholes in the U.S. tax code, lawmakers say.

The spotlight on Apple's tax strategy comes at a time of fevered debate in Washington over whether and how to raise revenues to help reduce the federal deficit. Many Democrats complain that the government is missing out on collecting billions because companies are stashing profits abroad and avoiding taxes. Republicans want to cut the corporate tax rate of 35 percent and ease the tax burden on money that U.S. companies make abroad. They say the move would encourage companies to invest at home.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, the company's chief financial officer and its tax chief are scheduled to testify and explain the company's tax strategy at a hearing by the subcommittee Tuesday.

They are expected to face tough questions. The subcommittee's chairman, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and other panel members could hold up Apple as an example of a powerful company using its privileged position to avoid taxes while ordinary Americans must pay them. The subcommittee last fall derided executives from other technology giants over similar allegations.

Apple refuted the subcommittee's assertions in testimony prepared for the hearing and released to the public Monday evening. Apple said it employs tens of thousands of Americans and pays "an extraordinary amount" in U.S. taxes, citing the roughly $6 billion it paid in fiscal 2012.

Apple "complies fully with both the laws and the spirit of the laws," the testimony says. "And Apple pays all its required taxes, both in this country and abroad."

"Apple does not use tax gimmicks," the statement says.

The company has made clear that given current U.S. tax rates, it has no intention of repatriating its overseas profits to the U.S. Apple reiterated in its testimony its support for comprehensive tax reform as a way to support economic growth and boost U.S. companies' competitiveness.

The subcommittee also has examined the tax strategies of Microsoft Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and other multinational companies, finding that they too have avoided billions in U.S. taxes by shifting profits offshore and exploiting weak, ambiguous sections of the tax code. Microsoft has used "aggressive" transactions to shift assets to subsidiaries in Puerto Rico, Ireland and Singapore, in part to avoid taxes. HP has used complex offshore loan transactions worth billions while using the money to run its U.S. operations, according to the panel.

The subcommittee's report estimates that Apple avoided at least $3.5 billion in U.S. federal taxes in 2011 and $9 billion in 2012 by using the strategy. The company, based in Cupertino, Calif., paid $2.5 billion in federal taxes in 2011 and $6 billion in 2012.

Apple uses five companies located in Ireland to carry out its tax strategy, according to the report. The companies are located at the same address in Cork, Ireland, and they share members of their boards of directors. While all five companies were incorporated in Ireland, only two of them also have tax residency in that country. That means the other three aren't legally required to pay taxes in Ireland because they aren't managed or controlled in that country, in Apple's view.

The report says Apple capitalizes on a difference between U.S. and Irish rules regarding tax residency. In Ireland, a company must be managed and controlled in the country to be a tax resident. Under U.S. law, a company is a tax resident of the country in which it was established. Therefore, the Apple companies aren't tax residents of Ireland nor of the U.S., since they weren't incorporated in the U.S., in Apple's view.

The subcommittee said Apple's strategy of not declaring tax residency in any country could be unique among corporations.

"Apple wasn't satisfied with shifting its profits to a low-tax offshore tax haven," said Levin. "Apple sought the Holy Grail of tax avoidance. It has created offshore entities holding tens of billions of dollars, while claiming to be tax resident nowhere."

The subcommittee's inquiry and hearing are intended to shine a light on "offshore tax-avoidance tactics" by Apple, Levin said at a news conference Monday with Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the panel's senior Republican. Companies' use of such loopholes has the effect of raising the taxes of ordinary Americans and increasing the federal deficit, he said.

McCain said that while Apple claims to be the biggest U.S. corporate taxpayer, it is also "among America's largest tax avoiders."

He called Apple's strategy "an egregious and really outrageous scheme that Apple has been able to orchestrate to avoid paying taxes."

Levin and McCain are proposing legislation to close loopholes in the tax code.

The subcommittee report also noted that Apple has been setting aside billions for tax bills it may never pay. As previously reported by The Associated Press, the overlooked asset that Apple has been building up could boost Apple's profits by as much as $10.5 billion. However, Apple has been lobbying to change U.S. law so it can erase its tax liabilities in a less conspicuous fashion.

In its second quarter ended March 31, Apple posted its first profit decline in ten years. Net income was $9.5 billion, or $10.09 a share, down 18 percent from $11.6 billion, or $12.30 a share, in the same period a year ago. Revenue increased 11 percent, to $43.6 billion.

Apple said in April that it will distribute $100 billion in cash to its shareholders by the end of 2015. The company is expanding its share buyback program to $60 billion, the largest buyback authorization in history, and is raising its quarterly dividend by 15 percent, to $3.05 a share.

In Monday's regular trading session, Apple's stock rose $9.67, or 2.23 percent, to close at $442.93.

President Barack Obama has proposed using the tax code to encourage companies to move jobs back to the U.S. and discourage them from shifting jobs abroad. Many in both parties say they want to overhaul the entire tax code, but there are vast differences in how they would do so.

Visteon's incar HABIT concept infotainment system puts road trip copilots out of a job

A good acronym also hints at what it does, and Visteon's new intelligent in-car concept, HABIT, is a good example of that. The Human Bayesian Intelligence Technology system -- to give it its full name -- learns the behaviour of drivers so it can automatically change the temperature, heat the seats and drop that Biohazard album just when you need it most. Factors such as weather, time of day and real-time road conditions all play a part, plus, of course a log of all your typical in-car interactions. It promises to go above just warming your behind on a cold morning though, offering intelligence that would be able to divine local radio stations that play your kind of jam when you're out of town. It could also seamlessly mix these with your local / tablet / smartphone library and internet sources. Sound a little too creepy? Wait until you see the computer-generated demo video presenter past the break.

Suspected US drone in Yemen kills 4 militants

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? A suspected U.S. drone strike killed four al-Qaida militants Saturday in a southern Yemeni province once overrun by the group, according to security officials.

The officials said the attack took place around dawn in an area called Deyqa in Abyan province. Officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Yemeni forces battled al-Qaida in Abyan province last year, routing militants from major cities that al-Qaida had briefly ruled during the country's 2011 political turmoil. The militants fled to surrounding mountainous areas after Yemen's military, assisted by the United States, forced them to retreat.

According to several research groups and The Associated Press's own reporting, there has been a dramatic rise in such drone strikes in Yemen since the country's new U.S.-backed president assumed power early last year.

Washington says al-Qaida in Yemen is among the group's most dangerous and active branches worldwide.

The U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Gerald Feierstein, met Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi on Saturday. Earlier this week, President Barack Obama extended an executive decision warning supporters of the country's former longtime ruler ? ousted after more than three decades in power by protests ? to stop hampering the political process or face having their assets frozen.

Hadi also told Yemeni state TV Saturday that tampering of the country's military jets over the past year is the work of either al-Qaida or those wanting to sabotage the army, a reference to supporters of Saleh still in government and security posts.

He vowed an investigation into the incidents.

Seven military aircraft have been sabotaged while still on the ground, including at least two that were torched.

Additionally, just five days ago a military plane on a training exercise exploded in midair over the country's capital, killing the pilot. It was the third such jet crash since Hadi took power.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? Boomers lost a significant chunk of their retirement nest eggs in the recession, but it was members of Generation X who were really hit the hardest, according to a report released Thursday.

If they don?t start paying off debt and saving more, Gen Xers (those between the ages of 38 and 47) and younger Boomers (those in their late 40s to mid-50s) are on track to retire financially worse off than the generations before them, according to analysis from the Pew Charitable Trusts, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit.

?Many younger Americans were already behind in saving for retirement, and suddenly millions of them were out of work or owned homes worth far less than they had been just a few years earlier,? the report said.

Including Social Security benefits, Gen Xers are projected to have enough money in retirement to replace only half of their annual pre-retirement earnings. Financial planners recommend retirement savers aim to replace 70% to 100% of pre-retirement income.

Between 2007 and 2010, members of Gen X saw their median net worth sink 45% from $75,077 to $41,600. That?s compared to a drop of around 25% for both younger Baby Boomers and older Boomers, between the ages 58 and 67.

By the end of the recession, Gen X held investments, retirement plans and savings with a median value of just $14,500, down from $19,382 in 2007. Younger Boomers had median savings of $32,135 and older Boomers had $55,850, according to the report.

And while only two-thirds of Gen Xers owned homes in 2010, those who did saw their median home equity plummet by 27% during the past three years, Pew said. In comparison, the home equity of younger Baby Boomers fell 14%, and older Boomers saw a 22% drop.

Gen Xers were also plagued by significantly higher debt levels, including mortgages, auto loans, credit card and student loan debt ? much of which was accumulated in the years leading up to the recession. In 2010, Gen X had a median debt level of more than $80,000, while younger Baby Boomers carried about $60,000 and older Boomers had less than $40,000.

Younger Boomers, between 48 and 57 years old, are slightly better off with a median expected income replacement rate of about 60%, although it pales in comparison to the roughly 80% projected for their older counterparts.

?Unless this path is altered, younger Baby Boomers and Gen Xers may face a real possibility of downward mobility in their Golden Years,? said Diana Elliott, research manager for Pew?s economic mobility project.

Pew?s study did not look at retirement security for anyone born after 1975, which leaves out the youngest Gen Xers and Generation Y, also commonly dubbed the ?Millennials,? who were born between the early 1980s and early 2000s. The country?s youngest workers, who are saddled with historic levels of student loan debt and are starting their careers in an unfriendly job market, likely face similar levels of retirement insecurity.

Weinstein showcases Grace Kelly, Mandela flicks

CANNES, France (AP) ? The Weinstein Company's fall slate of awards contenders will feature a glamorous Grace Kelly, a brawny Nelson Mandela and a mysterious J.D. Salinger.

Harvey Weinstein previewed some of his company's most anticipated upcoming releases at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday. He's made a habit of such previews, doing the same in 2012 for the Oscar-winning films "Django Unchained" and "Silver Linings Playbook." Last year, Weinstein said, was "as good as any year at Miramax" ? the first film company run by Weinstein and his brother Bob.

Nicole Kidman, a jury member at the festival, was on hand to introduce footage of "Grace of Monaco," in which she stars as Kelly after wedding Prince Monaco Rainier II (played by Tim Roth). It looks to be the kind of grand, alluring performance that often leads to an Oscar nomination.

"She has to go to a jury meeting to hopefully decide which of my movies wins the Palme d'Or," joked Weinstein before Kidman departed.

Weinstein has two films in competition at Cannes: the Bangkok noir "Only God Forgives" with Ryan Gosling and Kristen Scott Thomas, and the period film "The Immigrant" with Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix. He added, referring to jury head Steven Spielberg: "I've certainly given Steven enough money over the years."

Weinstein also showcased the Salinger documentary, "Salinger," which is being advertised like a kind of detective tale about the reclusive author. Weinstein made no bones about his strong interest in making a "Catcher in the Rye" film, noting that he was told by Salinger's estate that the decades-long list of suitors begins not with him, but Elia Kazan and Mike Nichols.

The long-awaited "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," starring Idris Elba, places Mandela almost in an action film context. The South African revolutionary appeared in footage shown Friday as a muscly firebrand, with hip-hop as part of the score.

"This is not your daddy's HBO version of Mandela," said Weinstein. "This is the kickass version of Mandela."

One of Weinstein's biggest releases for this fall is "August: Osage County," based on the acclaimed Tracy Letts play. It stars Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. Also with Oscar ambitions is the company's "The Butler," from "Precious" director Lee Daniels. Forrest Whitaker plays a long-serving White House butler in a sentimental tale through history likely to draw comparisons to "Forrest Gump."

Following the Weinstein Co.'s recent announcement that it will make a sequel to 2000's Oscar-winning "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon," Weinstein said he plans to make a franchise out of it. The Ang Lee film was based on a book in a series of five by Wang Dulu. Weinstein plans to make films of all of them.

Whether the fall collection of films will add up to the Oscar gold Weinstein covets remains to be seen. But Cannes has often been where he launches those aspirations. In 2011, he had at Cannes the eventual best picture winner, the French ode to silent film, "The Artist."

Porsche 918 Spyder: The Shape of Supercars to Come

Driving down the pit lane of Porsche's test track outside the company's Leipzig, Germany, factory, 918 Spyder prototype No. 25 is nearly silent as its runs on electric power. Exiting onto the track, the faint whine of the electric motors grows louder as we approach 94 miles per hour, the electric-mode limit. Finally, the midmounted 4.6-liter V-8 engine roars to life, the exhaust pipes booming inches behind my head.

The 918 Spyder is Porsche's next supercar, following in the footsteps of the Carrera GT, the 911 GT1, and the 959. It's an 887-hp plug-in electric hybrid that proves performance and efficiency are not mutually exclusive. As project leader Frank-Steffan Walliser explains: "For the first time, the technical solutions support both lap time and fuel consumption."

After several laps behind the wheel and a full day investigating what makes it work, we're convinced that the 918 points the way to a bright future for sports cars despite ever-tightening fuel-economy and emissions standards. And while this $845,000 car is out of reach even for rich people, the lessons learned will make their way down to more affordable rides.

HP Officejet Pro 276dw MFP

The HP Officejet Pro 276dw MFP is in the odd position of being head-to-head competition for two different Epson printers. The two Epson models?the Editors' Choice Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533 and the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4590?are nearly identical to each other, except that the WP-4590 adds support for PCL and Postscript and costs about $100 more. The HP printer includes PCL and PostScript like the Epson WP-4590, but is priced like the Epson WP-4533. That's enough to make it Editors' Choice as well, especially if you need PCL or Postscript.

All three of these printers offer speed and paper handling comparable to similarly-priced lasers, making them serious contenders as an alternative to a color-laser MFP for a micro or small office or workgroup. All three also offer a similar set of MFP features, with the ability to print, scan, and fax, including over a network; work as standalone copiers and fax machines; and scan to a USB memory key. In addition, the 276dw lets you print from a USB key, and it lets you print from or scan to a memory card.

All three printers also offer mobile printing. Connect to the Internet through a network connection, using either Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and you can print through the cloud. If you have a Wi-Fi access point on your network, you can also print from iOS devices using AirPrint. In addition, the 276dw lets you print from other mobile devices using the HP ePrint App, and it goes a little further than either Epson model by adding support for Wireless Direct, HP's equivalent to Wi-Fi Direct. Even if you don't have a Wi-Fi access point on your network, with Wireless Direct you can print from you iThing or other mobile device by connecting directly to the printer.

Paper Handling and Setup
The 276dw's paper handling comes up a little short compared with both Epson models, because it lacks a multipurpose tray. However it's otherwise a close match not only to the Epson printers but to most color laser MFPs in this price range, with a 250-sheet tray and duplexing standard. That's enough input capacity for most micro or small offices, but if you need more, you can add a second 250-sheet tray ($79.99 direct) for a total of 500 sheets.

For scanning, the 276dw offers a legal-size, rather than the more usual letter-size, flatbed, plus a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF). Even better, the ADF can scan in duplex, by turning the page over when it scans. And with duplexing available for both scanning and copying, the Copy menu includes options to let you copy both single- and double-sided originals to your choice of single- or double-sided copies.

As you might expect, this level of paper handling requires a large printer, at 12.4 by 19.5 by 18.1 inches (HWD). Assuming you have room for it, however, setup is absolutely typical. For my tests, I connected it to a network using its Ethernet port and installed the driver and software on a Windows Vista system.

HP Officejet Pro 276dw MFP

Speed and Output Quality
I timed the 276dw on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 5.9 pages per minute (ppm). That's essentially tied with the both WP-4590, at 5.7 ppm and the WP-4533, at 6.0 ppm. (At these speeds, a range of 0.3 ppm isn't statistically significant.) It's also faster than the color laser Editors' Choice Dell 1355cnw Multifunction Color Printer, at only 4.5 ppm. Photo speed is reasonably fast as well, averaging 50 seconds for a 4 by 6.

Output quality for business applications is a strong point, with top-tier text for an inkjet MFP and par-quality graphics. Photos on photo paper were at the low end of a very tight range where most inkjet MFPs fall, but better than any color laser.

Text output is a touch short of what I'd want for a resume or for serious desktop publishing, with edges on characters a bit less crisp than you'd get with a laser, but it's easily good enough for any business use, even with small fonts. It's also water resistant enough so it didn't smudge at all when I rubbed it with a wet tissue.

Par-quality graphics translates to the output being good enough for any internal business need, up to and including PowerPoint handouts. Most people would also consider it good enough for reports going to a client when it's important to convey a sense of professionalism.

Photos on photo paper qualified as true photo quality, but at the low end of the range for an inkjet MFP, or roughly equivalent to the low end of what you can expect from drugstore prints. This isn't much of an issue for a printer meant for office use, however. The quality is notably better than you would get with almost any color laser.

Quite simply, the HP Officejet Pro 276dw MFP delivers a lot of printer for the price. Its more notable features include laser-class speed and text quality, paper handling suitable for light to medium-duty printing by small office standards, the ability to copy and scan two-sided originals, and support for PCL and Postscript. That's more than enough to make it Editors' Choice. If you're in the market for a laser-class MFP for a micro or small office, the HP Officejet Pro 276dw MFP may well be the printer you want.

Suggestions To Start Competitively Marketing On The Internet ? Hot ...

Successful online marketing can be a goldmine if you approach it wisely. Starting a business online requires a time commitment. Use that time wisely, though, and you can get your business into the black a lot faster. Read the ideas below on what you can do to direct your time while marketing your livelihood.

Words such as ?simple? and ?easy? work very nicely in strategies for Internet marketing. People generally dislike overly complicated things, so adding tags like ?easy to order? and ?easy to use? can entice them to use your product. This is a great way to increase business.

Try to make your ads look unique, instead of traditional and common banner ads. By freshening up your banner ads, you will get more clicks.

Hosting an section on your site where people can create reviews is a powerful marketing tool. When customer?s post their experiences about your products it gets them involved and can be a great selling tool for your products.

You can use online tools to determine the efficiency of your marketing approach; one option is to calculate the percentage of site visitors who ultimately end up making a purchase. The most successful sites use customizable applications that track site statistics like sales and traffic.

Details matter when it comes to your website. Every page on your site should share the same basic headline, including the site name and a little bit of information about it. Often visitors may land on random pages and they need to know who you are and what your site is about.

Business can be done quite anonymously on the internet. This approach is especially useful for small businesses that rely on networking and word of mouth to foster customer loyalty.

Internet marketing does not have a set formula, in reality you can say it is composed of half science and half art. Before you start Internet marketing, do your research about both aspects. With your monetary aspects, try to maintain an analytic approach, but incorporate creativity with your marketing.

Although there are companies that can handle all of your email marketing needs for you, it?s well worth the effort it takes to learn the basics for yourself. There are many fairly easy things you can use, including mass mailers, mailing lists and auto responders. This knowledge will prove invaluable down the line.

If you are part of a smaller business, you undoubtedly know how competitive the online marketplace can be. To stay ahead of the competition, adjust your prices often and take your competition?s prices into account when you do. You can also allow customers access to an online storefront, which features all of your products in a single location.

A good website is crucial to becoming successful with Internet marketing. Be sure to test your website on a regular basis and eliminate bad links, broken graphics or glitches that might show up. Visitors who cannot use your site correctly cannot purchase anything.

Putting yourself in the best position to make a profit is what it?s all about here. Since these tips will help you become successful, do not ignore them. When you play close attention and try hard, you?ll have more customers quickly.

Rubio's PAC airing ads defending Ayotte on guns

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A political group backed by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida is coming to the aid of New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, airing a new television ad in the Republican's home state defending her stance on gun legislation.

Rubio's Reclaim America political action committee says in the new ad that Ayotte has sought to reduce gun violence in New Hampshire, home of the nation's first presidential primary. The ad points to "safety, security, family. No one understands these things like a mom and no one works harder for them than this one."

Ayotte opposed a key part of President Barack Obama's push to curb gun violence, a measure that would have required expanded background checks for people who buy guns online or at gun shows.

Since the vote, the senator has been criticized in tough ads aired by gun control advocates led by wealthy New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Ayotte, who faces re-election in 2016, was recently confronted at a town hall meeting by a woman whose mother was killed in last year's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Rubio is a potential 2016 presidential candidate who is seeking immigration reform in the Senate. Rubio's PAC estimated the ad buy was in the "six figures."

This Cheap and Fast SSD Is Your Deal of the Day

For the past few years, if you've asked what the best way to speed up an old laptop, you've probably been told to install an SSD. Sure, lots of new laptops come with SSDs or aren't user repairable, but if you're trying to squeeze the last few years of life out of an old lappy, the advice still applies: a little bit of NAND flash will make your computing experience a lot more enjoyable. Right now, Amazon's selling a decent SSD that won't cut into your laptop replacement budget.

Amazon's price matched Newegg's $90 price for a 120GB Sandisk Extreme SSD. This drive usually goes for between $110 and $120. Although this price is still a bit away from the magic 50 cent/GB mark, it's about the cheapest you'll find a decent replacement drive. First, make sure your laptop has a 2.5" bay, and if you still have questions about how to install it, check out Lifehacker's guide to SSDs. [Amazon]
