ITV Player 2.0 brings live streams of the UK broadcaster's TV channels to iOS

Image

It's on Apple's iPhone and iPad, but this is the ITV Player, not the rumored iTV supposedly under development in Cupertino. After initially launching last summer (along with an Android version) offering streaming video on-demand, the UK channel's iOS app has been updated to version 2.0 to offer a live streaming feed of its two channels. Other than just ITV1 and ITV2 over WiFi or 3G, if there's a live event being broadcast that isn't on either, you'll still be able to tune in via the app. Other new features include AirPlay Mirroring, easier switching between content, improved location detection (to determine what channels are available) and Retina Display quality graphics on the iPad. Unfortunately, The Digital Lifestyle points out catch-up access is still unavailable over 3G, but those with access should grab the new app from iTunes.

Nationwide adoption of NIST-developed test predicted to cut death toll due to cigarette-caused fires

Nationwide adoption of NIST-developed test predicted to cut death toll due to cigarette-caused fires [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 30-May-2012

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

In 2003, New York became the first state requiring cigarettes sold within its borders to pass a fire safety standard based on a test developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to reduce the risk of igniting upholstered furniture and bedding, a major cause of residential fires.

Last year, when Wyoming enacted a law similar to New York's, a milestone with lifesaving consequences was achieved: all 50 states had made the Standard Test Method for Measuring the Ignition Strength of Cigarettes (ASTM E2187) a regulatory requirement.

A new study* projects that, with nationwide adoption, deaths due to fires ignited by cigarettes or other tobacco products will drop 30 percent below the total number of such fatalities in 2003, the last full year before the ASTM E2187 was first implemented in a state. The projected decrease translates into about 200 lives saved annually.

People age 50 and older may benefit the most from the state regulations, according to the National Fire Protection Association study. This age group constitutes only 31 percent of the U.S. population, but accounts for 77 percent of deaths due to residential fires caused by smoking materials.

A NIST team, sponsored by the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and led by senior research scientist Richard Gann, studied how cigarettes ignite home furnishings and then developed the test method on which the fire-safety standard is based. In 2002, the private-sector standards organization ASTM International formally adopted the test as the recommended method for measuring the capability of a cigarette to continue burning and ignite bedding, upholstered furniture and related items. Gann now chairs the ASTM International Task Group that regularly reviews the standard with the aim of identifying potential improvement in light of recent research and market developments.

The path that led to the standard and its subsequent adoption across the United States spans 28 years, beginning when Congress passed the Cigarette Safety Act of 1984. The law mandated a thorough analysis of the feasibility of developing cigarettes with a reduced propensity to ignite furnishings. A technical committee led by Gann determined that a number of already-patented cigarette design features reduced the risk of ignition.

The committee also recommended developing a valid and reliable measurement method to determine that a cigarette is less prone to ignite a fire. Congress endorsed this recommendation in the Fire Safe Cigarette Act of 1990. Gann and his team developed two test approaches, but they eventually decided to promote their "cigarette extinction method" as a proposed standard.

Over the next decade, the NIST team subjected the test method to an extensive series of trials that involved testing laboratories throughout the United States and around the world. Results confirmed the test's validity and eventually quieted the objections of critics. Momentum in the states picked up in 2006 with the formation of the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes, a national alliance of fire service organizations, consumer groups, disabled rights advocates, public health practitioners, and others. The coalition advocated for industry and state adoption of ASTM E2187.

Gann welcomes the progress achieved over the last decade, but says there's more work to be done. "While U.S. deaths from cigarette-initiated fires are projected to be reduced by 30 percent, cigarettes will continue to be the largest cause of U.S. fire deaths," he notes.

Benefits of the standard are being reaped internationally. Canada, Australia and Finland already have adopted ASTM E2187. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has approved a version of the ASTM standard, as prepared by a committee chaired by Gann. This standard (ISO 12863) has been adopted by the European Union.

I really enjoy improving my life and want to find people who are interested in increasing their prosperity and learning about the law of attraction. How can I find similar minded people. All the people I know are poor-ish, unhappy, and have no desire for self-improvement. I feel like surrounding myself with more positive people would be helpful.

Militant Community Garden Harvest #3: Beets

It's beet time. We have so many lovely beets, I may turn red from all the beets I will be using this month. Our yellow beets from seed have a few more weeks to mature, but these red ace beets are ready to go.

I roasted a whole bunch for salads all week, and will be making a huge spinach salad w/ beets and bacon for our Memorial Day weekend party.

Here is my daily email from the happy folks at the militant community garden, for your reading pleasure:

"At least 3 pitchforks have disappeared from the Giving Garden shed. Only Giving Garden workers are allowed to use the tools in the shed for Giving Garden purposes only. If anyone has borrowed these tools or any others, we need them returned ASAP. They are clearly marked as Giving Garden tools."

So now we are gardening with thieves???? Maybe the rodents took the pitchforks.

We will surely be kicked out by tomato season.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

(AP) ? Major champions Sam Stosur and Svetlana Kuznetsova won in straight sets Sunday, quickly making their way into the second round of the French Open on opening day.

The sixth-seeded Stosur, who won last year's U.S. Open and reached the final on the red clay at Roland Garros in 2010, beat Elena Baltacha of Britain 6-4, 6-0 in the first match on the main court.

"It's a bit of an early start, but always nice to get through it now," the Australian said. "You have the whole day and whatever else to recover and, yeah, enjoy."

Kuznetsova won the French Open title in 2009 and the U.S. Open in 2004 but is seeded No. 26 this year. Against Mirjana Lucic of Croatia, she won 6-1, 6-3. The Russian faced little trouble despite being broken twice in the second set.

No. 10 Angelique Kerber of Germany and No. 20 Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic also advanced to the second round, along with Americans Melanie Oudin and Irina Falconi.

Playing later were seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams and 2008 French Open winner Ana Ivanovic.

None of the top three men was in action, but former major champions Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro were on the schedule.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will be on court Monday, and Rafael Nadal is to begin his attempt for a record-breaking seventh French Open title Tuesday.

Fabio Fognini of Italy became the first man to advance, beating Adrian Mannarino of France 6-0, 7-5, 6-1. No. 21 Marin Cilic of Croatia was next, defeating Daniel Munoz-De la Nava of Spain 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.

Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, also moved into the second round. The Spaniard beat Jonathan Dasnieres de Veigy of France 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.

The French Open is the only Grand Slam tournament that starts on Sunday. The other three all start on Monday.

"I don't think it's too big a deal now that it's more of a proper schedule," Stasur said. "I think the first year there was only a handful of matches, and, yeah, if you were on the schedule then, it really didn't feel like the tournament started. Nobody else was thinking that the tournament had started."

Stosur converted five of her eight break points, and briefly allowed Baltacha back into the match by being broken for the first set at 5-3. The Australian broke right back to take the set. In the second set, Baltacha won only four points on her serve, allowing Stosur to advance easily.

Kuznetsova raced through the first set of her match. After leading 3-0 in the second set, Lucic broke twice to get back to 3-3, but Kuznetsova then won the next three games to take the match.

The 30-year-old Lucic reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 1999, but she is now 11-44 against players ranked in the top 30.

Quality Index: The week's best iPad games - Bejeweled HD, Score! Classic Goals

Every week, Pocket Gamer sister site iPad Quality Index (iPad Qi) highlights the newest games to make a critical splash in the cool, seductive waters of the iPad pool.

Grabbing scores and opinions from all corners of the web, including from 148Apps, AppGamer, and No DPad, Qi answers all your iPad-related questions before you've even asked them.

Today, we're going to focus on two new contenders vying to be crowned king of your iPad. Both are worthy, but do they have what it takes to win your head, your heart, and your wallet?

A true gem

Bringing one of the most popular puzzle franchises ever created back to the top of the iPad Qi chart this week is renowned mobile game developer PopCap.

The braaains behind Plants vs Zombies HD has taken its cross-platform sensation Bejeweled and given it a high-definition facelift, meaning owners of the new iPad will be able to match-three on their scorching Retina displays.

Also, if you want a break from the classic gameplay, you can go digging for precious minerals in Diamond Mine mode or save ex-caterpillars in Butterfly mode.

Alternatively, if you just want to chill out and match gems without any time restrictions, Zen mode's leisurely pace and ambient soundtrack will help you swipe your cares away.

Slide To Play's reviewer found Bejeweled HD's visual upgrade a thing of beauty, promising that it will "astonish new iPad owners everywhere".

Magic moments

Meanwhile, rocketing into the top of the iPad Qi net this week is First Touch's football nostalgia game Score! Classic Goals.

As the incredibly literal title implies, the game reproduces a selection of the most significant - or simply downright gorgeous - goals in the history of international football.

First, you play through the setup to the goal, tracing the intended path of the ball with your finger. Then, when it's time to put it away, just recreate the ball's original arc and watch as destiny takes its course.

Accuracy is key, so you'll have to make sure you mirror the real-world goal perfectly if you want all three stars in your trophy cabinet.

The folks over at 148Apps were cheering on Score! Classic Goals from the touchline, deeming it "a very responsive and very enjoyable experience".

You can get the up-to-date information about which games are reviewing best over at the iPad Quality Index.

Cowgirl tennis qualifies for NCAA tournament

A small room erupted in celebration in Gallagher-Iba on Tuesday evening, for the OSU women?s tennis team received the news that its season would continue.

Coach Chris Young and his team huddled around a large screen TV to hear their name announced as one of the 64 teams that will compete in the NCAA Women?s Tennis Team Tournament.

?I?m really excited for the girls,? Young said. ?When I came here three years ago, I knew the challenges that were ahead of us. Today is the culmination of three years of hard work and determination, and it?s great for the girls.?

The Cowgirls will face Georgia Tech in the first round, a welcomed opponent.

?I knew that we would be right there playing a team that is pretty even with us,? Young said. ?We have seen them quite a bit. When you have some familiarity for an opponent, it helps us prepare for the moment.?

The Cowgirls? first match in the single-elimination tournament will be May 11, and Young said his team would be well prepared.

?I have experience in this, understanding how the schedule works out this first week will be tricky with finals, but after this week my experience will help them make the transition to post season,? Young said.

Junior C. C. Sardinha anticipated the reward of a postseason, and her hopes built up going into the selection show.

?We are pumped,? Sardinha said. ?There were hints that we would get in. It was just nice to finally hear it.?

Sardinha echoed the confidence that the Cowgirls are taking into the postseason and gave a glimpse of what has been behind the team?s success this season.

?We will play Stanford, UCLA, anyone; bring it on,? she said.

If the Cowgirls knock down their first three opponents, they could face UCLA in the quarterfinals, but that is a long way off.

Malika Rose, a junior for the Cowgirls, said the team is focused on the task at hand.

?We had this goal at the beginning of the year, but we didn?t think it was that close,? Rose said. ?We just want to take it one match at a time and focus on our advantage in the doubles matchups.?

Emerson Whitney: Carmen Carrera and Janet Mock on Lorena Escalera, Media Justice, and 'Utmost Fabulosity'

A wildly insensitive New York Times article on the life and death of trans artist and drag performer Lorena Escalera flared tensions between the gender-variant community and the paper when it was published as part of the Sunday edition on May 14. The article, called "Woman Dies in a Brooklyn Fire That Is Deemed Suspicious," served as a painful exemplar of the media's salacious, oversexualized understanding of trans women of color, said Carmen Carrera, Escalera's friend and fellow trans-identified drag performer. Carrera is most widely known for her performance on the third season of Logo reality series RuPaul's Drag Race.

"You know what it is? I knew Lorena from shows we did in the New York City scene," said Carrera in an interview with me. "She was much more than what they were trying to portray her as. She was always happy, always having a good time. And she was definitely a big inspiration to me."

Left to right: Raven, Lorena Escalera, Carmen Carrera

Escalera, whose success as a drag performer likely inspired many, was a direct influence on Ms. Carrera, who recently came out as transgender herself.

"When I read that article, I was like, 'Wow, are you serious?'" she said. "They put her gender above everything else. My first thought was, 'When I die, is that how it'll be? Nothing's going to matter besides my gender? Nothing I do for others, nothing else? What's the point, then?'"

Carrera described her disgust with The New York Times' depiction of Escalera as "curvaceous" and the fact that the writers of the article (Al Baker and Nate Schweber) depicted Escalera as a 25-year-old woman who "often drew admiring glances in the gritty Brooklyn neighborhood where she was known to invite men for visits to her apartment."

"If she was a non-trans female that was killed, they wouldn't have described her like that," she said. "The article makes it OK to portray trans people like, 'Oh, she was an escort. Oh, she was promiscuous.'? It's just disrespectful and shows so much ignorance."

Carrera, who recently made an appearance on the television show What Would You Do? as herself, said she lives as openly trans in order to combat such ignorance. In the episode of What Would You Do? Carrera plays a waitress confronting an angry longtime customer. The actor opposite Carrera is supposedly disgusted to find out that Carmen was once "Christopher" and used to identify as "he." The show was meant to raise awareness of trans issues.

"Sometimes I feel so discouraged," said Carrera. "Why do I feel like I can't have any pride in myself? The only thing that really keeps me focused is just doing what I do, doing my shows, being a positive role model. That's it."

Carrera says she chooses to live with?"utmost fabulosity," regardless of offensive comments and questions thrown in her direction.

"No matter what they tell you, being trans is definitely nothing to be ashamed of. It's the coolest thing around," she said. "Believe that."

With a similar "utmost fabulosity," Janet Mock, an editor at People.com, recently began a Twitter campaign called "#girlslikeus" for trans women and girls of color whose identities are so often negatively portrayed in the media and elsewhere.

"Where do we begin?" said Mock in an interview with me regarding the Times article. "It's kind of like a double-edged sword. When [the media] finds out that someone is a trans person of color, they seem to either ignore the story or blow gross stereotypes of transgender women way out of proportion."

lorena escalera, carmen carrera, janet mock, #girlslikeus
Lorena Escalera

Mock made reference to the lack of coverage for CeCe McDonald and Paige Clay, two trans women of color whose stories of injustice received virtually no mainstream media attention. She said that following the NYT article, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) contacted her for a statement after seeing her outrage over Escalara's story on Twitter. She gave them a statement, and GLAAD responded by amplifying the #girlslikeus campaign.

"I just felt bad for Lorena and the people who love her. It was a tough life to live, and she lived it gracefully and wonderfully," said Mock. "We lost someone who was very loved. And in that article, they stripped away her dignity in such a way that it was extremely disheartening. So it tells me: You can go to the pinnacle of what our community says is success, be a role model like her, and still be beat down. It was extremely upsetting."

Following a statement released by GLAAD, New York Times Metro Editor Carolyn Ryan issued a comment on behalf of the paper.

"We typically try to capture the personal stories of those whose lives are lost in a fire, and we sought to do so in this case," wrote Ryan. "We certainly did not mean any disrespect to the victim or those who knew her. But, in retrospect, we should have shown more care in our choice of words."

Janet Mock, girls like us, #girlslikeus, lorena escaper
Janet Mock

"That's where it scares me," said Mock in response to the statement. She was frustrated not only with the Times' use of words such as "curvaceous"?but with parts of the article that objectified Escalera as a person only emulating a woman, someone who tricked men into sleeping with her. At one point, the Times quotes Oscar Hernandez, a mechanic familiar with Escalera.

"For a man, he was gorgeous," Mr. Hernandez said in the article, which also quotes him as taking note of "Ms. Escalera's flowing hair and 'hourglass figure.'"

Is that type of reportage simply a misstep of word choice?

"It was just sloppy and arrogant," she said. "The Times won't even step up and say they were really wrong. It's beyond a choice of words. To me, this incident shows that [we as a community] are not organized enough yet to fight back at something like The New York Times. We need to organize. We need to make sure our voices matter."

In an attempt to provide this type of organized, vocal support for trans people in the press, a new grassroots group called the Trans/Gender Identity Media Advocacy (TIMA) organization is being formed on behalf of gender-variant people in the U.S. (full disclosure: I am an active member of the organization). TIMA aims to address egregious media portrayals such as Escalera's and?supports accurate representations of gender-variant people in the media within larger conversations on race, ableism, class, and other intersecting identities. The group is offering free media consultations for trans/gender-nonconforming people involved in potential press projects, people who are currently having difficulty with the press, and media members covering trans-related topics. To contact TIMA, visit their website here.

"We need more support. And we need more sensitivity from the media. See, the thing is this, I love myself," said Carrera at the close of our interview. "I just wish people would accept me for how I accept myself. Accepting myself is hard enough. I can't please everyone; I just wish people would have respect, especially for someone like Lorena."

Facebook IPO: The end of an era

The failure of Facebook's public debut may signal the end of the pie-in-the-sky tech start up, as well as the possibility that the post-crisis recovery rally is screeching to a halt.

By Bill Bonner,?Guest blogger / May 25, 2012

The sun rises behind the entrance sign to Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park before the company's IPO launch, in this May 18 file photo. Bonner suggests that the Facebook flop might signal the end of the economic recovery.

At first, when I listened to the accounts of old-time deals and devices I used to think that people were more gullible in the 1860s and ?70s than in the 1900s. But I was sure to read in the newspapers that very day or the next something about the latest Ponzi or the bust-up of some bucketing broker and about the millions of sucker money gone to join the silent majority of vanished savings.

? Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, circa 1923

Poor Zuckerberg. He?s got all those Facebook shares. And they?re dropping in price. The stock closed a bit over $31Tuesday?and then kept sinking? It was down to $30 in afterhours trading.

What did you expect? The company has sales of $4 billion. IF?IF?it were able to claw out a 10% profit margin?and IF a fair multiple for its earnings were, say, 10?the company would be worth $4 billion. Not $100 billion. Four billion dollars. And instead of having shares valued at $15 billion, Mr. Zuckerberg would have shares worth about $800 million.

The Dow itself was flat Tuesday. Not a very good showing after so many down days. We?ll keep our ?Crash Alert? flag up. The bottom could drop out at any time.

The Facebook IPO looks more and more like the end of an era. The end of the pie-in-the-sky social network era. The end of the post-crisis recovery rally. The end of the public?s residual confidence in Wall Street. The end of America?s youthful energy?its era of growth, innocence and hope for the future.

Now, growth rates are low; they?ve been falling for the last 30 years. The baby boomers are neither booming nor babies. Stocks are pass??people want bonds now. And 63% of voters think their children will be worse off than they are.

At least Zuckerberg has it made. He?s got about 500 million shares and options. But every two dollars they fall costs him about $1 billion. So, he?s lost $5 billion since the company went public on Friday.

Still, we?re not going to feel sorry for him. He?s still got $15 billion or so.

Not that we care how much money he?s got. He could have twice as much; he?d still be a putz. We saw the movie!

Seriously, Americans care far too much about money. That?s what people who don?t have it say. They say that too much money is a sign of greed. And that people with too much money can?t relate to everyone else. We lose our sense of community?our public space. People with money live separately from the rest of us. They buy elections and use too much energy?and leave small tips. They?ve got too much power, too much influence, and too much of the pie.

Paul Krugman, Thomas Friedman and Barack Obama want to solve this problem by taking money away from the people who have it. And making it harder for them to earn more.

The guys at J.P. Morgan lost a few billion. You?d think the anti-money crowd would be happy about that. Instead, they want to make a federal case out of it. Practically every pundit is calling for more regulation. ?If even good bankers can lose so much,? they say, ?we?ve got to get control of them!?

The whole idea that they can regulate risk out of the system is loony. It doesn?t work that way. The more they regulate, the more they distort the market, and the more mistakes investors make.

Investors are buying US treasury bonds, for example, by the boatload. Why? Because the regulators at the Fed have taken the risk out of buying bonds. If interest rates rise, the Fed will buy bonds itself.

Dear Readers and connoisseurs of regulatory FUBARity will appreciate the flexibility of America?s central bank. Its aim is to drive investors into risky assets?by suppressing yields on ?safe? treasuries. The unintended consequence is to create depression-like yields?and capital gains for bond buyers. Investors flee stocks?and go into the Treasury bonds the Fed was trying to get them out of. Thus does the Fed manage to bend its right leg far enough to kick its own derriere.

People who don?t like the rich should spend a little time thinking about how the rich got that way. Were they smarter than others? Greedier? Or just luckier?

In our humble observation, we?d say they were a little of all those things. But most of the big increase in wealth the rich enjoyed has come thanks to those same regulators whom the feds want to sic on them.

Yes, dear reader, the rich got richer because of the fixers?not because of the rich themselves. In 1971, Richard Nixon changed America?s money. The old money ? backed by gold ? flowed to the hardworking producers. It was saved, invested, and put to work. This new money had different ideas. It ran around in different circles. It preferred a different class of friends ? bankers, money managers, investors, speculators, venture capitalists, derivative mongers, private equity operators?

You can see this shift illustrated in the difference between Mitt Romney and his father. The ol? man ran an auto company. He made cars. That?s where the money was back then. He made the Rambler. Remember that? We had one. It was cheap. It was ugly. It ran. What more could you ask for?

But the son never made anything?but money itself. He didn?t run productive companies. Instead, at Bain Capital he was a leading member of the new class of people who fiddled with them.

By 2007, this class had gotten far too big for its britches. The whole capital structure began to wobble. Left alone, it would have crashed to the ground?bringing rich people down to earth with it.

Left to its own devices ? without the generous support of the feds ? the Dow might have fallen to 6,000 in 2008?and kept falling. And it probably would have brought down J.P. Morgan?and Goldman Sachs?the Bank of America and most of the rest of Wall Street. Even GM, which by then had become a finance company, would have gone out of business.

And today?there wouldn?t be nearly as many rich people to complain about. Problem solved.

Instead, the fixers fixed it so the fixees stayed fixed.

Hey?here?s another bubble?getting ready to blow up. Bubble bubble student trouble:

Student Loans With Over $1 Trillion are Likely One of the Next Hindenburg Zeppelin Financial Infernos

Barry James Dyke, author of The Pirates of Manhattan II: Highway to Serfdom predicts that student loans, in excess of $1 trillion, will likely be one of the country?s next financial infernos.

Federal student loans interest rates will rise to 6.8% on July 1st 2012 from their current 3.4% base if Congress does not act. Banking lobbies oppose any reduction in interest rates. If Congress does nothing, the average student?s $23 thousand subsidized loan costs will increase an additional $5,000 over a ten year period.

The author states, ?Student loans are a form of indentured servitude as student loans cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. Student loans do not die with death. Collection agencies can call day and night to collect student loan debts. Garnishment to pay student loan debt is common. Students are not getting enough well-paying jobs to pay back these enormous loans, yet The Department of Education through the Department of Treasury can attach tax refunds to pay off student loans. What is more, our Congress drove the getaway car for academia and the banks in 2005 with the Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 ? which turned student loans into non-dischargeable debt.?

According to the Department of Education, two thirds of students who earn a bachelor degree use some type of loan to finance their education with an average loan of roughly $23 thousand. The New York Times recently reported that as much as 94% of students borrow to get a college degree.

The taxpayer underwrites roughly $105 billion a year in Title IV student loans a year, with $24 billion going to for profit schools owned by Wall Street asset managers. Student loans guaranteed by the taxpayer are a major source of revenue for the US higher educational system and if default rates accelerate, it could bring about a Greece like debt problem to the nation?s colleges.

?Excessive borrowing for an education will be a dark cloud hanging over this generation for decades,? claims Dyke. ?Default rates on student loans for traditional undergraduate and graduate rates are currently as high as 15.8%, and as high as 48% for for-profit colleges. The New York Fed reports that nearly one in four student loan holders are falling behind on their student loan payments.
