What Are You Reading? - Great Books for Kids and Teens

Getting a slow start this morning, but I see bright sunshine and two of our four family members are off to school/work, so that's a good start!? Wow, what a weekend.? After a week with both of our sons home sick, I was feeling a bit stir-crazy and desperate for some quiet solitude, so I just left on Friday!?

Some friends loaned me their beach condo for a quiet getaway, and I drove down there to spend 24 hours on my own, taking care of no one but myself.? It was....weird, but good.? It took me a while to actually relax, but the downtime was a welcome respite.? What a strange world where doing dishes takes only two minutes (wash 1 plate, wash 1 fork), and I can do anything I want!? I got 3 hours of audio book time on the way there and back.? I didn't do as much reading as I'd planned because I stopped at the library on my way and picked up the entire 7-hour mini-series of Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth, which I read and loved last summer.? I didn't watch the entire series (still have 2 episodes to go), but it was fun to just lie on the couch and escape into the story!

Of course, I returned home to all the same stuff - messy house, sick kids, long to-do list - and spent the rest of the weekend working on some urgent things with looming deadlines, but the time away definitely helped.

So, here's what we read last week:

  • I finished middle-grade novel The Whisper by Emma Clayton, sequel to The Roar which my son and I both loved.? I think the first book was a bit better, but this novel provided a satisfying ending.
  • Yesterday, I finally started to read Skeletons at the Feast, a novel set in 1945 Europe by Chris Bohjalian, my neighborhood book group's choice for this month.? We meet on Wednesday, so I am afraid there is virtually no chance I can finish this 360-page novel before our discussion.? Since Bohjalian is known for his surprise endings, this could be trouble - I may have to lock myself in the bathroom for part of our discussion.? Damn that 7-hour mini-series!
  • I am listening to an audio book, Falling Together by Marisa De los Santos. I enjoyed reading her earlier novel, Love Walked In, and am enjoying this one so far, too. It was fun to lose myself in the story during my drive this weekend, instead of my usual routine of listening in 10-minutes spurts.
  • My husband, Ken, is still reading an e-book, Big Lake by Nick Russell, on his Kindle Fire, and Another Thing to Fall by Laura Lippman, a hardcover novel.
  • Jamie, 17, is almost finished with Timeline by Michael Crichton, one of my favorites of Crichton's many exciting novels.? Despite several sick days last week, his reading has slowed down because he's hooked on a video game!? With his brother also home sick last week, they played non-stop (one of the things I was eager to escape from!)
  • Craig, 14, is reading The Secret of Pirates Hill, a classic Hardy Boys book and is enjoying the familiar, fast-paced mystery.
I posted two new reviews last week: Breathless by Dean Koontz, a unique and mystical story very different from his horror novels, and The Girls of No Return by Erin Saldin, a teen/YA novel about a wilderness reform school that I enjoyed.

What are you and your family reading this week?

Veteran U.S. military nurse dies in Kelowna, B.C.

A British Columbia woman who at the age of 102 made a well-publicized trip to Washington, D.C., last year to return an emotional symbol of thanks has died.

Hilda Cann passed away recently at a Kelowna, B.C., hospice.

She had successful surgery for colon cancer last summer, but elected not to undergo radiation for a separate diagnosis of liver cancer.

"She chose to just enjoy the days that God was giving her," said her son, Bill Cann. "Mom had been in good health until January, when she had a fall, and her condition deteriorated."

Born in Manitoba, Cann served as a U.S. military nurse during the Second World War.

During her service, a dying airmen asked her to make a trip to his Ohio home to pass on a final message of love.

Cann agreed and met with the widow in the summer of 1945.

Later, as a token of her appreciation, the widow sent Cann a floral-patterned, linen tablecloth.

Though it was one of her most treasured possessions, Cann decided on her 100th birthday to return the tablecloth to American hands.

Last June, she travelled to Washington, D.C., to present the tablecloth to the American Women's Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Five retired U.S. generals, among other dignitaries, received Cann who was also interviewed by U.S. and Canadian media.

She also met with young U.S. Army nurses who held the rank of first lieutenant, the same rank she had during the war.

"It's such a fundamentally human story of how Hilda made it her mission to deliver, in person, a message of love from a dying man to his wife," said Lt.-Col Douglas Martin, an attache at the Canadian Embassy, at the time.

If I am starting a very small cosmetic company would it be more ...

Question by Sasa: If I am starting a very small cosmetic company would it be more beneficial to be sole proprietor or LLC?
If I am starting a very small cosmetic company would it be more beneficial to be sole proprietor or LLC? How much more do i have to pay in tax if i am a LLC? Do I have to pay taxes if I am an LLC even if i didn?t make much income for this side business?

Best answer:

Answer by CFPwunaB
It depends on how you set up the LLC. With an LLC you can elect to either be taxed as a sole-proprietor OR as a corporation. In 95%+ cases you will pay more taxes if you elect to be taxed as a corporation, so it usually doesn?t make sense. If you elect to be taxed as a sole-proprietor you will likely face less taxes, but I can?t say for sure without knowing your entire financial position.

In most cases, the greatest benefit to becoming an LLC rather than a sole proprietor is the legal protection LLC?s provide. Generally, if your LLC is sued the person sueing it can only recover the assets that belong specifically to the LLC, whereas if you are a sole proprietor, the person can recover all of the company?s assets as well as all of your own personal assets (house, car, desk, computer, iPod, etc.)

Give your answer to this question below!

Lenten Crafting Ideas- 10 Ways to Craft ?For Good? | Craft Test ...

Lenten Crafting Ideas- 10 Ways to Craft ?For Good?

For the Christian community, the next 40 days leading up to Easter are a sacred time- I time to reflect, grow, and recommit to God and spiritual practice. For me, Lent is a time not of deprivation, but of random joy. I choose to interpret Lent as a season in which I can spread kindness and the essence of ?Christian values? by the things that I DO. And if you know me, crafting is what I do. So why not combine the two?

Little tags and envelopes I?m sending out as RAK?s- Random Acts of Kindness.

So, I thought I?d share some of my Lenten craft ideas and practices? maybe you?ll get inspired. Most of these are Random Acts of Creative Kindness-(RAKs or RACKs)? just little things I make and send out to the unsuspecting. My hope is that the unexpected act of beauty will brighten someones day!

Random Acts of Creative Kindness:

  • Create little notes to slip to your kids, spouse, parents, friends. Tell them that they are beautiful, special, LOVED. Yes, you say it, but having it in writing is special. (See my post about Camp Cards to see what I mean.)
  • Make up a batch of cookies or candies, add a little tag that says, ?Because you?re sweet? and pass them out to crossing guards, lunch ladies, school custodians, bus drivers, postal workers, what ever?you know, those folks to improve our quality of life but we don?t usually take the time to say thank you.
  • Are you a cardmaker? Make cards to give away. Nursing homes and after-school programs regularly need cards for residents/participants to give to loved ones for special occasions.
  • Knitter? Make a hat. Or two. Or twelve. Somewhere near you, a chemo unit or a NICU (neo-natal) unit needs caps to keep those heads warm.
  • And in that vein?. use up your odds-and-ends of yarn to make striped scarves. Donate them to a men?s shelter, homeless shelter, group home, or even your closest school.
  • Are you blessed with abundance? Donate supplies. Nursing homes, hospitals, daycares (if the products are non-toxic) and even art therapists need art/craft supplies to make the lives of their clients richer. I bet you have something to spare.
  • Use up your fabric stash making lap quilts and baby quilts. Seniors in wheelchairs love pockets in theirs, too.
  • Make jewelry? Make 10 pairs of earrings, and sell them to your friends, family, co-workers for $10 each. Donate the proceeds to the charity of your choice.
  • Each one teach one. Share your skill! Teach someone to knit, crochet, embroider, sew a straight line, or master a wrapped loop. Trust me, someone out there would benefit greatly from the skills you take for granted. And moreover, someone would love the kind, nurturing attention that instruction brings.
  • Create little plushies or pillows and give them to the Red Cross or to the Child Life Department of your local hospital. Often, in times of catastrophe, kids lose their stuffed animals, blankets and ?lovies.? It?s a small way to comfort someone who might have lost everything. In my own experience, my daughter (then 2) had to be rushed to the ER for stitches. To calm her, they gave her a little pillow to hold and squeeze when she felt scared or in pain. She?s 7 now, and STILL has that pillow. It made all the difference.

?

So, there?s my list. I know you all have good ideas to share too. Please, won?t you take a minute to leave your ideas in the comments section?

Risks and Challenges Involved in International Business ...

International businesses have to face risks and challenges at many fronts. Some are similar to the risks and challenges a domestic business confronts and some are unique. Even the challenges that are similar by definition differ in nature. For example both types of businesses have to face financial challenges, but an international business will be facing many factors related to global financial markets that don?t affect domestic businesses as much. They are more of a challenge in nature than risks and most of them can be handled through proper planning. Keep reading to understand these challenges better.

The challenge of international planning & strategy:
The first challenge for an international enterprise is to make a global strategy and then implement it. The managers and those at decision-making positions often find it difficult to change their thought pattern, which is not used to work in global paradigm. There are many international businesses but just some of them have truly adopted a proper global strategy. Though the situation is improving with more and more trained graduates and professionals taking on the management roles. Nevertheless, international business management requires extra ordinary management, foreseeing and leadership skills.

Financial and economic challenges:
It starts from arranging the funds to start international business and includes everything such as fluctuation in exchange rate, global economic crisis (or some economic crises in the host country), shift in oil prices, global inflation or tariff barriers imposed by the host government, also the export related policies of your own government.

International Politics:
Political know-how is a must for everybody but it becomes all so important when operating at international level. If some policies were suitable for your business, a change in ruling party can bring drastic changes in those policies. Political chaos will bring down the economy and with that your business. To prevent your business from such negative impacts, you need to make sound political judgments.

Environment, natural disasters and warfare:
Many multinational businesses have to face serious opposition by some environment friendly organizations. Citizens are more concerned about air and water pollution these days as it is becoming a serious threat to their health. Some natural disaster like floods and earthquake, or some kind of civil war breaking out in the host country is also in the list of possible challenges. A new challenge that an international business has to bear now days in some specific countries is the threat of terrorism.

gE Blog Series: Global Real Estate Part 3 - Green Construction ...

In many of the leading construction markets, the market for sustainable construction is expanding rapidly. This standard started in the mid 2000?s with the introduction of the LEED certification for buildings. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and was developed by the United States Green Building Council. This standard has started to transform the construction industry and is now taking off elsewhere in the world as well.

The benefits and opportunities green construction provided were realized by larger clients and in order to stay competitive, many contractors had to become LEED certified. Many benefits for an economy can be realized using green construction. Operating costs for businesses are reduced due to decreased energy consumption, and multiple jobs and revenue sources are created. From 2000 through 2008, green construction generated $173 billion in economic activity and supported 2.4 million jobs; the LEED building standard generated $830 million in economic activity and 15,000 jobs. This boom in green construction is improving the environment, and creating jobs ? a win, win in anyone?s book.

The processes used to construct a green building vary. Using different roofing tiles, implementing water heating instead of air heating, and growing gardens on roofs are only scratching the surface of green construction techniques. An example of another method includes Calera Corp, a company who produces cement globally and creates two and a half billion tons of carbon dioxide annually. A new process by Calera absorbs half a ton of harmful greenhouse gases for each ton of cement produced. And fresh water is created as a by-product. Additionally, if cement factories were placed next to coal-fired power plants, they could absorb the power plants carbon as raw material.

Geographically speaking, more green construction projects are being executed in the United States, but more countries are becoming involved. Dow Corning is getting involved with these projects in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. In the last five years, 50 states and seven countries (India, China, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Spain, and Sri Lanka) have taken part in 2,000 LEED certified building projects. Green building is revolutionizing the way builders around the world design construction projects. The health of our planet and communities demands that we push markets to continue to innovate these sustainable options for construction.

Valuable Tips For An Effective Time Management

Always remember that any time you waste in life is the time that you will not get back. It is irreplaceable. Everything else in life is replaceable. For example, if your computer breaks you can replace it; if your car breaks you can replace; of course you need a lot of money but as a matter of fact even money cannot replace time. If you waste or spend your time in the wrong way, then it means your time is lost forever. There is no turning back the clock and fixing your time. All right friends! This paragraph was just to make you realize that time is precious. I compiled some useful points while surfing the net with the services of Cox Communications. So let us take a look at some useful time management techniques for avoid time wastage and lead a successful life. They are briefly described as follows.

First of all, it is important to be realistic and practical in your approach.

Don?t try to schedule too many things at a time. If you breakdown too many tasks then you are only going to get stressed out, and be overwhelmed. Moreover, you are not going to do anything because your stress level is going to be so high when you are looking at everything. And is all you need to lose your focus. The best thing is to break your tasks into simple manageable steps and take it one at a time.

The next step in effective time management would be to organize yourself. Organizing yourself pretty much means to go ahead and design a scheduler or an agenda if you would like ways on how to organize your tasks for the day and what you need to do.

5 ways to organize a planner
Use technology to organize yourself. For example, on Microsoft windows, you can use the calendar to kind of breakdown on what you need to do.

You can even use your laptop, iPad, Smartphone, or even your IPod to design your planner.

Start early on assignments- This will help avoid procrastination. Don?t wait until the last moment to finish your assignment. Start researching on the assignment as soon as you get it and start working on it at the earliest.

Stay focused
This is harder than it seems because we have the cell phones, computers, laptop, and social networking sites that are always distracting us. But you need to have self-control. Think of the reward and stay focused on attaining your goal as fast as you can.

Sleep and be healthy
Do your exercises regularly. Whether it is in the morning or in the evening or any time in between your daily activities, you got to do it regularly; just to stay away from getting stressed out with the work overload of the day.

For students, doing part time jobs in the free time is also one good way to learn about the importance of time management. By doing so, students can learn how to manage their college or school work and their office (part time) work. The ultimate thing is that certain habits have to be cultivated at a very young age itself. One has to always keep him or her occupied with some work most of the time. Even at home, children and students can engage themselves in learning activities. TV watching or Internet browsing is good but it can also be done in a productive manner. When you are in the Internet try to make use of the gifted technology available and learn something useful from it. So these are some of the tips that will help you to manage your time effectively.

QuickBooks: items and Inventory: Company Preferences ...

The Items and Inventory?section of the preferences section is an important part of QuickBooks. However, it is only important if you are dealing with a company that sells items. Service companies do not need to work much with this screen, QuickBooks Items and Inventory Part 1unless they are looking to turn inventory options off in QuickBooks. Here is a run down of the options in the Company Preferences?section. We will continue this description in further part 2, and we will be detailing the Advanced Inventory Settings on this page in a later post.

  • Inventory and Purchase Orders are Active
    • Check this box if you use inventory in your business. It will give you access to the items and inventory features in QuickBooks. If you do not check this box, then most of the rest of the Items and Inventory screen will be grayed out.
  • Warn about Duplicate Purchase Order Numbers
    • Checking this box will cause a warning message to display if you try to enter a purchase order with an order number that is already in your QuickBooks company file.
  • When Calculating Quantity Available for my inventory, deduct:
    • Quantity Reserved for Pending Builds
      • This option will take away any inventory that is needed for filling a pending build order. A pending build order is an order that could not be filled due to lack of inventory. So if you have a pending build order, checking this option will automatically deduct the inventory needed to fill the order.
    • Quantity on Sales Orders
      • Checking this box will make it so that uninvoiced items on sales forms will not show in the Available Inventory screen.

Kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart gets married

Kristin Murphy / Kristin Murphy / AP file

Elizabeth Smart's wedding was moved up to Saturday because of attention given to the couple her father said.

Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped at age 14 from her Salt Lake City home and held for what she described as "nine months of hell,"?married her fiance in Hawaii on Saturday, her father told a Salt Lake City newspaper.

Ed Smart told the Salt Lake Tribune that his daughter wed Matthew Gilmour at the LDS Laie Hawaii Temple. The Tribune said a July wedding appeared to be in the works but the date was moved up because of attention the couple was receiving.

"The bride and groom were beaming as they left the LDS Temple," family spokesman Chris Thomas said in a statement, the newspaper reported.

Smart is now a 24-year-old advocate for missing children and occasional TV news commentator.

Smart was abducted at knifepoint from her bedroom in June 2002 by a homeless street preacher, Brian David Mitchell, and was repeatedly raped and forced to wander with her captor from town to town for nine months.

She was freed after being spotted by passers-by in a Salt Lake City suburb in 2003.

Mitchell was convicted in 2010 of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines to engage in sexual activity. He was sentenced in May to life in prison.

Smart testified during Mitchell's trial, describing her time as his captive as "nine months of hell."

Mitchell's wife, Wanda Barzee, was sentenced to a 15-year prison term in 2010 after pleading guilty to conspiracy and cooperating with prosecutors in the case against Mitchell.

ABC News announced in July it had hired Smart as a contributor on stories about missing persons.

Google's Dart lands in Chromium tech preview

Leaves weren't the only things flying around Mountain View last Autumn if you remember, Google also unleashed its Dart programming language. Now, developers can get their hands on a tech preview version of Chromium, with the Dart virtual machine baked right in. There are Mac and Linux binaries available today, but no details about other platforms (ahem Windows) at this time. The preview lets you run your programs directly on the Dart VM, skipping the separate compilation stage. While it's just for developers at the minute, there are plans to include this in standard Chrome releases in the future. Aim at the source link after the break for the full details.

Interior Painting And Remodeling Ideas To Get It Done Right ...

Home improvement projects are a great way to add value to your home. If you are adding something like an in-ground pool or a new addition, this is especially true. You also improve the value of your home with maintenance work like adding new windows. If you don?t have any emergencies to see to, you can take on smaller projects. You can find plenty of low cost projects to do so you can work within any budget. To help with your next home improvement project, here are some pointers to consider.

Once you decide to paint, do the job yourself or hire someone to do it for you. There are a number of things to think about if you want to start painting your home interior. The climate and the time of year that you were going to paint are important parts of your planning.

This way you will know what kind of paint you need to purchase so that it will last the longest amount of time. Also, you may want to consider using an environmentally safe paint, or non-toxic paint. Small children could get sick if exposed to certain paints which is why you need to choose accordingly. Regardless of the cost, safety should be your number one issue when buying paint. If you have exterior screens, then it is important to maintain them in good working order. If you have torn screens, you?re inviting every flying and crawling critter into your home. If you live in an area with mosquitoes, you know the importance of keeping them outside. Screens are no longer made of metal like they were years ago. What you will find now are much softer synthetic materials that are cloth-like. But since they can tear very easily, they need to be treated with great care.

Bathroom home improvement projects are a bit unusual only because they are not highly visible. An extravagant bathroom usually is not the goal of people who are remodeling their home. There are a few people that actually will bite the bullet and spend the cash.

Mostly people want comforts such as a heat lamp to turn on when they step out of the shower or bath. Then there are some truly beautiful choices for sinks and bathtubs. You will more than likely be very picky with this particular room because it is more personal and private. Once you are done, check to make sure you have proper aeration in the room and no leaks on your faucets. Doing home improvement projects is a great way to bring the entire family together. You can work on your house as a team and get satisfaction from a job well done. But no matter how small the job your working on is, it?s important to always work safely.

As you are putting all that effort into your residence and garden, you might as well take things to another level. One thing that will help to make any home look nice is a Mercedes parked out in front. Seek advice from your nearby Mercedes supplier for more information.

To swiftly and easily locate the finest Mercedes Vito for sale and make all your wishes be realized, make sure you visit the practical Mercedes Vito for sale website instantly.

Exploiting Innovation for market dominance: A case for Technology ...

Government of India has declared this decade (2011 -20) as the ?Decade of Innovations?. Manmohan Singh has promised to increase R&D spending from 0.9% to 2% of GDP by 2017. MSMEs are economic growth engines for developed and more for the developing country like India. With this notion, InnovAccer ? an Indian Innovation Management firm collaborates with Yourstory.in to create awareness of Innovation and Intellectual Property amongst startups. Starting from today, InnovAccer will release one article every week for 20 weeks to help startups gear up to innovate in the right direction and protect intellectual property at its best.

Anyone can run a business, but running a sustainable business depends on whether you provide cost advantage to the customer or present to them new innovative products or services. With fluctuating economy worldwide, cost advantage is no more a reliable strategy. Even China who is a master of providing cost advantage has initiated innovation strategies after rise in their labor cost. Multi-National Corporations have huge assembly lines and supply chains in process to release out a product within months, while startups have to rely on their innovative technology which is unique in the marketplace. Thus, Innovation and protecting that innovation is a key to sustainable growth of a technology start-up.

Let?s shift our gears to economic advantages of obtaining a patent besides its value for exclusive right protection. Consider a scenario below, wherein figures represent cost of production. Company II is playing on cost advantage and ruling the market share. Now assume that company I obtained a patent. Whole market scenario changes from thereon. Company II and III have to give license fees to Company I and thus Company I has cost advantage over Company II and III.

A company like company III which has neither cost or innovation advantage loses the race. While innovation company I always wins the race.

Future posts will cover stimulating and resourceful articles on how to exploit patents to create?& benefit your business and make it into a sustainable model.
