Future Windows Could Use a Biomimetic Circulatory System to Save Energy

Windows, our source of life-giving sunlight indoors, are a menace to your electrical bill. In the summer, windows bleed cold and in the winter they ooze heat. To save energy, researchers want to give window panes a circulatory system that could pump in cool, liquid relief when they get too hot.

Union sponsored fast food strikes

JWF Inexplicably Believing They Deserve $15 an Hour, Fast Food Workers Walk Off the Job Let?s see how well they get by on $0.00 per hour. There?s a slowdown of fast food today, as hundreds of workers from chains including McDonald?s, Burger King and Wendy?s are walking off the job at city restaurants. That is a relatively small percentage of the number of fast food workers in New York. They want the industry to pay what they call a living wage of $15 an hour and to allow workers to form a Union without retaliation. Today?s walkout kicks off a week-long series of strikes in seven cities. Workers in Chicago, St. Louis, and Detroit are planning walkouts later in the week. They should get a lot of sympathy in a bankrupt hellhole like Detroit. Meanwhile, one of these losers claims he?s trying to support a family ? on minimum wage. MORE . ...

California Democrats' board passes marijuana legalization resolutions

Some California Democratic Party marijuana legalization-friendly resolutions appear to be largely symbolic but some say it could be the start of something nationwide.

The California Democratic Party executive board on July 21 passed some marijuana-friendly resolutions, including requesting President Barack Obama to allow the newly enacted marijuana legalization laws in Colorado and Washington state to take effect with no federal interference; asking Obama to end federal raids in states with medical marijuana laws; and a comprehensive study be immediately undertaken to produce recommendations for reform of the nation's marijuana prohibition laws.

Another resolution that passed asks state legislators to establish parameters for cities and counties on licensing, nuisance abatement and zoning for medical marijuana dispensaries.

"It's mostly symbolic," said Jack Pitney, a Claremont McKenna College political scientist. "When people go to polls on a ballot measure, they're not paying attention to what a political party organization will say about it. I seriously doubt the Democratic Party will spend any money on this measure."

Pitney said the idea of legalizing or decriminalizing marijuana is gaining traction nationwide.

"You could see more of this as time goes on," Pitney said.

But applying some of the medical marijuana distribution language locally creates a different set of issues, he

said.

"On one level, a lot of people say that medical marijuana is a good idea but in practice the dispensaries have created problems with local governments," Pitney said. "Because the clientele does not consist of the Brady Bunch. I think (local governments) will shrug their shoulders as long as the state doesn't try to force dispensaries on them and cities have flexibility on determining whether they can open in their boarders. I think that's what would be crucial. They have the ability to keep things out if they want or bring them in if they want."

Covina Police Chief Kim Raney, who is the president of the California Police Chiefs Association, called the marijuana-friendly language "an extreme view of the issues" and like Pitney felt it was largely symbolic.

"I don't think this even justifies a response from the association at this point," Raney said.

But he discussed the resolutions anyway.

"What we find out historically is when resolutions come out, they take a very extreme position to create attention and conversation but they're nowhere near the reflection of the average voter in California about the issue," Raney said.

People, he said, are "starting to see the farce the medical marijuana legislation is." But he also said there is one sentence in the resolutions that he agrees with.

"There does need to be a comprehensive national study and conversation about marijuana," Raney said.

California Democratic Party spokesman Tenoch Flores said Thursday that the resolutions are "a reflection of the views of the executive board" and speak for themselves.

Lanny Swerdlow, founder of the Inland Empire Patients Health and Wellness Center in Riverside, which closed after the state Supreme Court upheld local governments' right to ban medical marijuana dispensaries, works with the Brownie Mary Democratic Club of Riverside and pushed for the resolutions.

"I was surprised how smoothly it went through," Swerdlow said, adding his club is a "marijuana interest group" in the Democratic Party.

"If I had not formed it and we had not had the resolution introduced, it would not have had success," he said. "We're trying to get others formed ... and go county by county here."

Prep football two-a-days: Snow Canyon

The Snow Canyon Warriors football team hasn?t seen the postseason since 2006, and that kind of resume ordinarily wouldn?t make a new coach flush with excitement.

But it?s also true that Snow Canyon scored a big win over Dixie, which eventually went on to capture the Class 3AA state title, in a late-season game.

?

Snow Canyon Warriors

ASSIGNMENT ? Class 3AA South

LAST YEAR: 6-4 overall, 4-3 Region 9

KEY RETURNER ? Trevor Horlacher, sr., RB/OLB

PLAYER TO WATCH ? Keaton Plant, sr., OG/DT

BIGGEST HOLE ? Defensive backfield

NEED TO KNOW ? The quarterback position, which still is undetermined, will be key in Matua?s shotgun, spread attack.

That win shows Warriors coach Marcus Matua the possibility that may present itself on the gridiron.

"The talk among coaches is that it?s going to take us a couple of years," Matua said. "We don?t believe that. I?m excited. I?m stoked for this opportunity. The boys have been great. They?ve been working hard. They will be able to be competitive. We just need to solidify the depth chart."

Matua will turn to the likes of returners Trevor Horlacher and Keaton Plant to lead the team.

Horlacher, who spearheads the Warriors? defense at outside linebacker, is particularly versatile on offense Matua said the senior can "play anything" on that side of the ball.

Matua loves the participation numbers ? there are 80 players in the program.

"I think our chances are great," said Matua, who was hired to replace Jay Graft last December. "The kids have bought into the system. Snow Canyon has always had the talent. It?s just a matter of putting it together."

Microsoft Security Essentials 4.3

The launch of Security Essentials sees Microsoft attempting to give Windows users an all-encompassing anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware application, for free.

The interface is clear and intuitive, with simple options to scan for viruses or back up and restore files. The health bar lets you know your security status and will guide you through the necessary steps when problems arise.

Microsoft claims that 70 per cent of consumers do not have anti-virus software or do not keep it updated, so Essentials is specifically aimed at inexperienced users who may not have the technical know-how or time to manage a computer on a daily basis.

This version Microsoft Security Essentials will only work in genuine versions of Windows.

The latest Microsoft Security Essentials ships with a license that enables you to use it for free in your small business (up to ten licenses). Ideal for a home office, department or small team.

The Whitey Bulger Trial

FBI agent Scott Garriola talks to the media about the investigation at the Archview apartment complex in Los Angeles, California.

FBI agent Scott Garriola talks to the media in Los Angeles

Court opens Friday with Internal Revenue Service agent Sandra Lemanski on the stand. Lemanski is there to describe the Whitey Bulger?s money-laundering offenses. Fake payrolls, shady real-estate transactions?it?s nothing we haven?t heard about before. Lemanski?s charts helpfully feature cartoonish sacks of money with dollar signs on them, to give the jury the hint.

The most interesting moment in her testimony comes when we learn that, as an IRS criminal investigator, Lemanski was trained at a federal law-enforcement academy. She received instruction in firearms and defensive tactics. It?s the Tea Party?s worst nightmare: an IRS agent who can physically kick your ass if you refuse to comply with her tyrannical directives.

Once Lemanski?s testimony?s done, we hear from FBI agent Scott Garriola. Garriola runs a fugitive task force based in Los Angeles. He headed up the operation that nabbed Whitey in Santa Monica, Calif., back in 2011.

After getting a babysitter (he was on vacation when the tip regarding Whitey?s whereabouts came in), Garriola surveilled the exterior of the modest apartment Whitey shared with his girlfriend, Catherine Greig. Garriola lured Whitey out by getting the building manager to telephone the couple and tell them their storage locker, in the building?s garage, had been broken into. When Whitey went down alone to check it out, he was confronted by Garriola?s four-person squad.

?He had a white summer-style hat on, and he was dressed in light soft colors,? recalls Garriola. ?We asked him to get down on his knees on the ground. He swore at us a few times. He said he wouldn?t get down on his knees because there was grease on the ground. There was an exchange of words.?

Eventually Whitey was handcuffed and subdued. At first he gave an alias. Then he gave up the ghost. ?You know who I am,? he said. ?I?m Whitey Bulger.? (This is one of the first times we?ve heard Whitey?s nickname in court. He reportedly hates it. Lawyers and witnesses have referred to him as Jim, James, or Mr. Bulger.)

?I asked him if I needed a SWAT team to get Catherine out of the apartment,? says Garriola. ?That?s when his tone and demeanor changed.?

Whitey became cooperative. He signed the search consent form as ?James J. Bulger,? noting, ?This is the first time I?ve signed this name in a long time.? He led agents through the apartment, pointing out piles of guns, knives, and ammunition he?d stashed behind walls. Thirty firearms in total: semi-automatic .45-caliber handguns, .357 Magnums, an AR-15 rifle, a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun with a pistol grip. Even a dainty .22-caliber Derringer. And more than $800,000 in cash. As a prosecuting attorney lays out this physical evidence on a table?the currency wrapped in clear plastic bags?the courtroom hits the Warren Zevon trifecta: lawyers, guns, and money.

It?s quite an arsenal for a little old octogenarian who was ultimately taken unarmed. Garriola says he asked Whitey if he?d planned to shoot it out in a final stand. ?He paused,? remembers Garriola, ?and then he said no, because a stray bullet might hit someone.? Not a consideration Whitey gave when he allegedly shot Michael Donahue, a completely innocent bystander who happened to be in the wrong place when Whitey wacked a fellow gangster.

On cross-examination, the defense tries to emphasize that Whitey turned all lambish with the FBI guys because he thought it might spare his girlfriend from harsh judgment. But Catherine Greig got sentenced to eight years in prison anyway. The prosecutor in her case asked to put her away for even longer.

With Garriola done, the government is out of witnesses. It?s been a murderer?s row?quite literally?from 20-time killer John Martorano to sexual abuser and corpse mutilator Stephen Flemmi. But all repulsive, horrific things must come to an end. ?At this time,? intones prosecutor Brian Kelly, ?the United States will rest its case against James Bulger.?

Next week, the defense begins. It?s looking pretty thin. It appears Whitey will try to show that he wasn?t an FBI informant (good luck with that) and that he committed merely 17 of the 19 murders he?s accused of (sounds like he wants to pin the strangulations of Debra Davis and Deborah Hussey on his cretinous pal Stephen Flemmi). But that?s about it. Might take two days.

That is, unless Whitey testifies. And that?s the question the judge puts to the defense team after the jury has left for the day. ?Have you made a decision about whether your client is taking the stand?? she asks lead defense attorney Jay Carney.

Every media member in the courthouse leans forward, ears pricked, fingers crossed. But Carney is coy. He won?t give us his answer until at least Monday, and likely not even then.

The judge comes at it another way. ?Regardless, do you think that the jury is likely to get the case at some point next week?? she asks. This is a mildly disingenuous question. If Whitey volunteers to testify, he?ll be up there forever.

?I don?t know the answer,? says Carney.

?I do, your honor,? pipes up prosecutor Kelly, quite cheekily. Kelly seems confident that Whitey won?t dare open his mouth and face the government?s grilling.

Kelly?s baiting Whitey. The prosecutor would love nothing more than to cap off the trial with an epic cross-examination. In fact, I think we?d all like that. But I?m prepared to be disappointed. Whitey always wants to call the shots, and clamming up may be his final power play.

A handful of walnuts every day can help to slow or prevent prostate cancer growth

(NaturalNews) Nearly one-quarter of a million men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, accounting for 30,000 deaths from this largely preventable disease. Some forms of prostate cancer are very aggressive, quickly metastasizing to remote area of the body, while other forms remain localized and grow slowly so they never threaten the life of the individual. Prior research studies have demonstrated that cancerous cell growth is promoted by a diet consisting largely of hydrogenated fats and excess sugar, as well exposure to household and environmental pollutants.

A research study team from the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio has released the results of a study in the journal, Cancer Investigation that explains how eating a modest amount of walnuts can protect against prostate cancer. Past studies have shown a reduced incidence of breast cancer related to walnut consumption and scientists wondered whether a walnut-enriched diet versus a non-walnut diet would be associated with reduced cancer development.

Using a mouse model that simulates human prostate cancer, investigators injected immune-deficient mice with human prostate cancer cells. Within three to four weeks, tumors typically start to grow in a large number of these mice. Researchers found that three of sixteen mice (eighteen percent) eating the walnut-enriched diet developed prostate tumors, compared with fourteen of thirty two mice (forty four percent) on the non-walnut control diet.

Additionally, the average tumor size in the walnut-fed animals was one-fourth the average size of the prostate tumors that developed in the mice eating the control diet. Senior study author, Dr. Russell Reiter commented "We were absolutely surprised by how highly effective the walnut diet was in terms of inhibition of human prostate cancer." The positive results gleaned from this study did not reflect a large consumption of walnuts. Mice were fed a pulverized walnut mix that was equivalent to a human consuming about two ounces every day, roughly equal to a large handful or 28 walnut halves.

Dr. Reiter concluded "The data to date suggest that using walnuts on a regular basis in the diet may be beneficial to defer, prevent or delay some types of cancer, including breast and prostate." Walnuts have demonstrated human health benefits ranging from reduced incidence of heart disease, cognitive decline, men's reproductive health, many forms of cancer, optimization of blood lipids and weight management. Present research indicates that two ounces eaten daily can help prevent a myriad of chronic disease conditions.

Louie Gohmert Compares Civil Rights Of Minority Groups To Snail Darters

Rep. Louise Gohmert (R-Texas) compared the civil liberties of minority groups to snail darters and prairie chickens at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday.

The hearing was convened to discuss the Sunshine for Regulatory Decrees and Settlements Act, a House bill that, according to Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), "could be used to prevent federal regulatory actions from being implemented."

Gohmert was responding to an amendment to the bill presented by Conyers and Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.). The amendment would prevent third party intervention in regulatory action that would protect individuals from discrimination based on sex, race or national origin.

"There is nobody in this chamber who is more appreciative than I am for the gentleman from Tennessee and my friend from Michigan standing up for the rights of race, religion, national religion of the Delta Smelt, the snail darter, various lizards, the lesser prairie chicken, the greater sage grouts and so many other insects who would want someone standing for their religion, their race, their national origin and I think that?s wonderful," Gohmert said of the measure.

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) criticized Gohmert's comments and defended the amendment, which failed to advance in a vote of 13 to 16.

"This is not a snail darter?s amendment, it is not an environmental amendment," he said. "It is a civil rights amendment, and we?re talking about the civil rights of people ? the civil rights of people that have been violated egregiously for generations in this country."

This isn't the first time the representative stirred controversy during a committee hearing. Gohmert lost his temper at a hearing in May, tearing into Attorney General Eric Holder for questioning the integrity of his statements.

"I cannot have a witness challenge my character," Gohmert said, as House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) repeatedly reminded him that his time to speak had expired. "The attorney general will not cast aspersions on my asparagus."

Selig proud of baseball's anti-drug effort

Updated: July 24, 2013, 8:40 PM ET

Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- Commissioner Bud Selig defended baseball's fight against performance-enhancing drugs on Wednesday, declining to discuss the recent suspension of Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun or whether other stars will also face penalties.

Braun was suspended for the rest of the season Monday, a total of 65 games, for violating baseball's anti-drug policy. He is the first player to be punished as part of an investigation of the now-closed Biogenesis Clinic, which is believed to have provided performance-enhancing drugs to as many as 20 other players; a list that is believed to include injured New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

Selig said he could not discuss the ongoing investigation.

Mike and Mike

ESPN investigative reporter T.J. Quinn weighs in on the state of the Biogenesis investigation, Ryan Braun's suspension, Alex Rodriguez's status, the timetable for MLB's punishment of other players and more.

"Any comment from me is inappropriate, "Selig said. "People have been thorough. I said last week the process would be comprehensive, thorough, fair and we have spent thousands of hours doing these things. I appreciate all the players who have been complimentary of the process. We're doing this in a very a disciplined, thorough, fair and sensitive matter."

Selig said he was proud of baseball's drug-testing program. Since the program was first implemented in 2004, 32 major league players have been suspended for using banned substances. Three were suspended a second time.

In addition, 47 minor league players or players formerly in the major leagues have been suspended, including six repeat offenders.

"It took a long time," Selig said. "I said we would aggressively enforce that program. Obviously, if you have a tough testing program, you have to do that. Given the whole history and what we've accomplished, having the first testing program in baseball history -- baseball didn't have a drug-testing program at any time in the '80s when, and I will say this very candidly, we had a very serious cocaine problem. There were the Pittsburgh drug trials, 29 players were convicted, four went to jail and the union still wouldn't agree to a program.

"So I'm proud of what we've done. We will continue to enforce the program."

Selig, whose family owned the Brewers from 1970 until 2005, was at Miller Park to take part in a youth baseball program.

Ford 2Q shines as North America, Asia lead the way

DEARBORN, Mich. Ford Motor Co. is finally becoming the well-rounded company it aspires to be.

Almost bankrupt last decade because it relied too heavily on selling big trucks and SUVs in North America, the second-largest U.S. automaker is now making small and midsize cars at a profit and selling them across the globe.

Ford's Asian operations earned a record quarterly profit of $117 million in the three months ended June 30, and 20 percent of Ford's sales came from the region. That's up from 11 percent five years ago. Sales also grew in South America, where second-quarter profit jumped to $151 million from $5 million a year ago. Ford even narrowed its losses in recession-weary Europe.

"I call it a green shoot. We're at the beginning of the phase where you'll start to see ? over the next several years ? the operations outside of North America take on a lot more significance," Ford's Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks told media Wednesday at the company's Dearborn, Mich., headquarters. "You're starting to see what's possible."

North America still contributed the bulk of Ford's net income, which grew 18.5 percent to $1.23 billion in the April-June period. But Shanks noted that the rest of Ford's global regions broke even for the first time in two years, clawing their way back from a $600 million loss in the first quarter.

Ford handily beat Wall Street's earnings and revenue forecasts and raised its profit guidance for the year. The company now expects 2013 profit, before taxes, to be equal to or better than the $8 billion it reported a year ago. Previously the company had expected to match that profit. Ford also expects sales in the U.S., Europe and China to be at the upper end of its previous forecasts.

Ford's stock rose 2.5 percent to close at $17.37 Wednesday, its highest close since Jan. 27, 2011.

The company's results were propelled by a $2.3 billion profit in North America, a second-quarter record for that region. Pickup truck sales are booming in the U.S., where construction companies and other businesses are rapidly replacing the fleets they held onto during the recession. Sales of Ford's F-Series pickup ? which has long been the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. ? jumped 26 percent in the second quarter, or more than three times the average industry increase.

Ford's total U.S. sales rose 15 percent during the quarter, according to Kelley Blue Book.

Bill Selesky, an analyst with Argus Research in New York, said Ford is attracting new buyers worldwide with the strongest lineup it's ever had. In the U.S., Ford set a quarterly record for hybrid sales thanks to its new C-Max, and the company has said that more than 60 percent of its U.S. hybrid buyers are trading in other brands. In South America, the Ranger small pickup helped revive sales and gain market share despite social unrest in Brazil. In Europe, the tiny Fiesta and B-Max helped Ford's sales increase 6 percent in June even as the rest of the industry declined.

"If things get better in Europe, all the geographic areas will be making a contribution," Selesky said. "You're going to see a lot of revenue going forward, and that's what Wall Street wants to see."

Selesky has a price target of $21 on Ford's stock. He said he might raise it after Wednesday's report.

Barclays analyst Brian Johnson said the second-quarter results should reassure investors concerned about international losses biting into North American profits.

"The results provide some comfort that break-even in Europe is achievable and South American losses will be contained," he wrote.

Ford narrowed its expected loss for the year in Europe, to $1.8 billion from $2 billion. The company has said it expects to break even in Europe in 2015.

Ford lost $348 million in Europe in the second quarter, its eighth straight quarterly loss in the region, but a $56 million improvement over the same quarter last year. Shanks noted that Ford gained market share thanks to its new vehicles.

Asia was a drag on Ford's earnings for most of the last two years. But Ford's sales jumped 47 percent in China in the first six months of this year as Ford introduced popular new vehicles like the EcoSport and Kuga SUVs. Total industry sales grew 17 percent in China.

Ford has poured money into new factories and product development in Asia as it tries to catch up to rivals such as General Motors and Volkswagen who appreciated the region's potential sooner. Ford wants a third of its sales to come from Asia by 2020.

Ford's earnings amounted to 30 cents per share in the latest quarter, the same as a year ago. Without one-time items, including separation payments in Europe, where Ford is closing several plants, the company earned 45 cents per share. That surpassed analysts' forecast of 37 cents, according to FactSet.

Revenue was up 14 percent to $38.1 billion, beating analysts' forecasts of $34.9 billion.

Texas bust yields cocaine hidden in truck battery

LA GRANGE, Texas (AP) ? A South Texas woman faces a drug charge after about 12 pounds of cocaine turned up hidden in the battery of her vehicle bound for Houston.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office says Alma R. Presas of La Joya (luh HOH'-yuh) had her three elementary school-age children along when she was arrested Monday near Flatonia (flah-TOHN'-yuh). That's about 100 miles west of Houston.

A deputy stopped the woman for a traffic violation and officials say Presas seemed very nervous. She allowed a search. Officers found cocaine with a street value topping $100,000.

Presas was charged with possession of a controlled substance and freed on $10,000 bond. No information was immediately available Tuesday on an attorney for the woman. The children were reunited with their mother after Presas was freed.

Prostate cancer treatment revealed as yet another useless medical procedure

(NaturalNews) As we have often reported, most traditional cancer treatments are fraught with unnecessary health risk and are part of what we have described as a "criminal cancer industry" that exploits the bodies of women and men solely for profit.

And little by little, modern cancer treatment regimens are being exposed for what they are - part of a scam that funnels money to an industry that neither seeks a cure nor spends much time discussing cancer prevention, because prevention would deprive the industry of the profits of "treatment."

The latest evidence of this comes from a study of older men who scientists said died from causes other than prostate cancer, even though almost half of them were found to have had prostate tumors. And, added Reuters, "up to half of those tumors detected on autopsy would have qualified for treatment had doctors known about them while the men lived, though none had been the cause of death."

'Wait and see' approach

What does that mean? The study's authors said they believe criteria for treating prostate tumors "might be worth reexamining," a conclusion which supports a growing school of thought that it might be better to wait and see if prostate conditions worsen before jumping right into treatment - which includes invasive surgery, poisonous chemotherapy and body-ravaging radiation therapy.

"The study suggests that the progression of early prostate cancer, including some more aggressive forms of the disease, is far from inevitable within a man's lifetime as many such tumors are found in men who died from other causes when their prostate is analyzed on autopsy," lead author Dr. Alexandre Zlotta, who is the director of Uro-oncology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, said.

"The study concludes that it is probably worth re-examining our current definitions of clinically unimportant and clinically significant prostate cancer," Zlotta told Reuters Health in an email.

The scientist said he and his colleagues took a look at the prostate glands of more than 300 men who were past the age of 60 and who had died from a variety of causes - excluding prostate cancer. Zlotta's team conducted autopsies on 220 in Russia and 100 in Japan, both countries where prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screenings are not performed with as much regularity as in the U.S.

"Zlotta and his colleagues selected a Caucasian population of Russian men similar in lifestyle and risk factors for prostate cancer to U.S. men in order to look at how common the cancer is in older men who have not been routinely screened," Reuters reported. "In the U.S., the number of tumors they found would have been much lower because many would have been identified by screening and treated or removed before death, Zlotta pointed out."

For a comparison, he said his team "chose an Asian population in Japan because clinically detected prostate cancer and mortality are much lower among Asian men compared with Caucasian men and their lifestyles/diet are dramatically different."

Many fewer Japanese men are diagnosed with, or die from, prostate cancer than do U.S. men. But the study nonetheless found that the disease is prevalent in the same proportion of men - and that serious tumors are even more common - in Japan, according to prostate exams conducted on men who have died.

'Unnecessary side effects'

According to results of the study, which were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, nearly 40 percent of Russian men were found to have tumors of the prostate, compared with just 35 percent of Japanese men. One-in-four tumors in Russian men were considered serious enough to have required surgery or radiation in the U.S.; that compares with one-in-two tumors in Japanese men.

But despite growing evidence that postponing or, better yet eliminating, dangerous prostate treatment, there are still too many "establishment" medical types who want you to believe that cutting, burning or poisoning a man's body is a better course of action.

"We should be cautious about trying to apply the results to Americans where we have a very heterogeneous population including very high risk groups such as African Americans," Dr. Stacy Loeb, a urologist at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, told Reuters.

Loeb does, however, at least acknowledge that prostate screening can also detect smaller cancers, and that aggressive treatment of those can lead to "unnecessary side effects," Reuters said.

Then again, the screening process itself is dangerous. Read staff writer Ethan Hunt's piece on that here: http://www.naturalnews.com.

Moroccan king approves resignations, paving way for coalition talks

RABAT (Reuters) - The king of Morocco on Monday accepted the resignation of cabinet ministers from the junior party in the ruling coalition, the palace said, a move that opens the way for Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane to begin trying to form a new government.

Five ministers from the conservative Istiqlal party quit this month, arguing among other things that the senior partner, the Islamist Justice and Development party (PJD), was hurting the poor by reducing food and fuel subsidies too fast.

"The king has accepted these resignations and urged the outgoing ministers to remain in office until the appointment of others," said the statement, carried by the state news agency. "This will allow the prime minister to begin consultations to form a new coalition."

Benkirane has told local media that he will hold talks with all parties to seek a new coalition partner.

Morocco defused Arab Spring-style protests in 2011 with a combination of social spending, harsh policing and constitutional reforms that paved the way for the PJD to come to power.

However, last year the government agreed to implement economic reforms including deregulating many prices of staple goods in return for a two-year, $6.2 billion precautionary credit line from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Benkirane said last month that the IMF had criticised his government for being too slow to enact the reforms, which will mean pain for households used to subsidised oil, gas, sugar and other staples.

Nevertheless, the planned subsidy cuts have been delayed until after the current Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Subsidies burned up 53.36 billion dirhams of public money in 2012, or 6.4 pct of Morocco's GDP, and the government has said it expects to cut this by a fifth.

Lefty claims a trophy he thought might elude him

GULLANE, Scotland (AP) ? Phil Mickelson wondered if he'd ever win this venerable trophy, the one he proudly posed with on Muirfield's 18th hole as photographers snapped away and fans chanted his name.

Raised on the lush, manicured courses of America, Lefty crafted a game that required one to look toward the sky. Booming drives. Soaring iron shots. Chips and wedges that floated, then spun improbably to a stop.

Beautiful to watch ? except when Mickelson was trying to win the claret jug.

Links golf is played along the ground, a version of the game he fretted about ever mastering.

"It took me a while to figure it out," Mickelson said late Sunday, another step closer to a career Grand Slam. "It's been the last eight or nine years I've started to play it more effectively. But even then, it's so different than what I grew up playing. I always wondered if I would develop the skills needed to win this championship."

He did it with the greatest round of his life.

Heck, it was one of the greatest closing rounds by anyone in major championship history.

While crusty Muirfield took out the other contenders ? Down goes Tiger Woods! Down goes Lee Westwood! Down goes Adam Scott! ? Mickelson blazed to the finish with a 5-under 66, matching the lowest score of the week in the pressure cooker of a final round.

Most impressively, he saved his best shots for the end, making birdies on four of the last six holes. The only challenge left was not to celebrate while eight of his rivals were still out on the course.

When Mickelson hit two exquisite 3-woods at the par-5 17th, the ball rolling onto the green for what he knew would be, at worst, a two-putt birdie, the championship was his to lose. Not that he hasn't pulled defeat from the jaws of victory before ? most infamously in the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot. So there is still a bit of trepidation among the Phil-natics when he strolled to the 18th tee.

This time, he was right on the mark.

He drilled a hybrid down the middle, then ripped a 6-iron perilously close to the edge of the left bunker, the ball kicking right just as he intended. It rolled to a stop 10 feet behind the flag, and he rolled in the last of his birdies even though he didn't need it.

Mickelson thrust his arms in the air and let out a yell. His caddie, Jim "Bones" Mackay, began sobbing. Just off the green, his wife Amy and their three children waited to dole out some hugs.

"He works real hard and he wants it," Mackay said, explaining why the tears came so easily. "He really, really wants it."

Mickelson is 43 years old now, closer to the end of his career than the beginning, but he still has a passion for the game and a desire to tie up some of the loose ends. This was one of them, something to add to his three Masters wins and a PGA Championship. Only 13 golfers have won more major titles; only five of those have won all four legs of the Grand Slam.

The last one eluding Mickelson is the U.S. Open, a championship where he's been the runner-up six times ? most recently last month at Merion.

"He's resilient," Mackay said. "He looks forward."

Most certainly, Mickelson hasn't given up on adding that other Open to his resume. No matter what, he'll go down as one of golf's greatest players.

"The guy's done a lot," his caddie said. "He's done a lot of really cool things on the big stage."

Mickelson began the final round at Muirfield with a lot of ground to make up. He trailed Westwood by five shots, the 40-year-old Englishman never in a better position to pick up his first major. Woods was two shots behind, eager to end the longest major drought of his career. Masters champion Scott was also in the mix, as well as Hunter Mahan.

Westwood managed only one birdie all day, his strong putting touch finally undone by a bunch of errant shots. Woods was happy with the way he hit the ball, but never figured out Muirfield's slick greens, which he insisted got slower as the week went on. Scott held the outright lead on the back nine for the second Open in a row, but was doomed again by four straight bogeys.

"I let a great chance slip," Scott said. "Had I played a little more solid in the middle of that back nine, I could've had a chance coming in."

But this didn't feel like Lytham, where Scott threw away an almost-certain victory on the last four holes and eventual winner Ernie Els was almost apologetic. Mickelson earned this title.

He described it as "probably the best round of my career," complete with "some of the best shots that I've ever hit," and threw in that he "certainly putted better than I've ever putted."

Not a bad combination.

Playing five groups from the end, Mickelson crept into contention on the front side as those ahead of him began to falter. He had a couple of two-putt birdies on the par 5s, made par on everything else, and went to the back side even for the tournament ? a score he felt might be good enough to win.

A bogey at the 10th, where Mickelson hit his second shot into a bunker and couldn't get up-and-down, briefly halted his momentum. But the best shots were still to come.

At the par-3 13th, Mickelson knocked a 5-iron to 8 feet and rolled in the putt. At the next hole, a 9-iron curled up 18 feet from the flag and he made that. A par save at the 16th ? after the tee shot rolled back off the front of the green ? was crucial. When Mickelson went to the tee box at the 17th, he was tied for the lead. By the time he got to the green, 40 feet away after two swings of the 3-wood, the lead was all his.

"I believe this is the first year we've had electronic scoreboards here at the British Open, and I was able to see one right there on the 17th green," he said with a grin.

Mickelson lagged his putt right up next to the hole and tapped in for another birdie. The lead was two shots.

By the time he rolled in that last birdie, the engraver was already etching Mickelson's name on the claret jug, even though the last four groups still had to finish.

The only possible challenger, Westwood, needed an eagle at the 17th just to have a chance. But he was done when his second shot sailed off into knee-high rough.

By then, Mickelson was accepting hugs and signing autographs. He'd already signed his card for a 3-under 281 ? the only player to finish below par.

Henrik Stenson shot 70 and took the runner-up award at 284. Ian Poulter shot an early 67 and thought he might have a chance at 285. Instead, he wound up tied with Scott (72) and Westwood (75).

Woods was among those another shot back after a 74, his major drought still intact. The last of his 14 championships came at the 2008 U.S. Open; 21 majors have passed since then without him pulling any closer to Jack Nicklaus' record of 18.

"I'm very pleased with the way I'm playing," Woods insisted. "I just never got the speed (of the greens) after the first day."

Mickelson was reluctant to let go of the claret jug now that it's finally in his grasp.

Not to worry.

It's his for a whole year.

"This is probably the most fulfilling moment of my career," Mickelson told the fans. "I'm very proud to be your champion."

Video Conversion in Python on Google App Engine

I am using Google App Engine to host a website where I want users to be able to upload any video and then I want to use flowplayer to display it, which requires MP4 and webm formats to support all browsers. I have it working correctly where a user uploads a video and then I can serve it but I need to convert it into those two formats so that I everyone can view the video.

Is there any Python project I can import to do the conversion on App Engine or any resources showing how I can do it with something like Google Compute Engine? I need it to be done automatically on the server and most projects that look stable for this in python are written to by done by command line on a personal computer.

Bag in hand, pope takes off on flight to Brazil

ROME (AP) ? It's wheels up on Pope Francis' first trip abroad as pontiff.

A special Alitalia flight carrying Francis, his entourage and journalists who will cover him on his weeklong visit to Brazil took off 10 minutes behind schedule Monday from Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport.

Keeping to his example that the Catholic church must be humble, Francis carried his own black hand luggage. He even kept holding it with his left hand while he used his right to shake hands with some of the VIPs who turned out to wish him well and while he climbed the stairs to the jet's entrance. Among the dignitaries was Italian Premier Enrico Letta.

The flight goes straight to Rio de Janeiro.
