C.J. Mosley making sure 'everybody is focused on Alabama football and getting our defense right'

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama ? It seems like yesterday when C.J. Mosley was a freshman linebacker, getting ready for his first Alabama football season fresh out of Theodore High School.

But that was 2010. He?s a senior now. He?s a star, and he?s the leader of an Alabama defense that has some holes to fill this season.

None of those holes is at linebacker. Inside linebacker Trey DePriest and strong outside linebacker Adrian Hubbard are back as juniors, as is Jack linebacker Xzavier Dickson. But sophomore Denzel Devall might start instead of Dickson.

Mosley shared an inside spot the past three years with Nico Johnson, who has moved on to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mosley is ready to shine. This is his fourth preseason camp. He and DePriest, who started 13 games last season, know what to expect from each other.

?So all we're worried about is making sure that the younger guys and the freshmen are buying in and letting them learn the way of the defense,? Mosley said.

Heralded freshman Reuben Foster and Walker Jones are the newcomers. Reggie Ragland has one season of experience.

Overall, Mosley agreed that this is a unit that is ahead of where it was as a group a year or two ago.

?To start camp off, you always start from the bottom up,? he said. ?Make sure everybody is focused on Alabama football and getting our defense right. Making sure everybody learns the calls before we start worrying about the rest of the season.

?As a whole, we're all connecting with Reuben and Walker to make sure they're doing what they have to do to be productive on the field. So we just have to be sure we have their back and know what to do.?

Though he is impressive physically, Foster looks like a freshman, according to Mosley.

Ragland has made progress, Mosley said.

?He's more comfortable with his position,? Mosley said. ?That's the main thing. Last year he was kind of still getting the feel for it, just being a freshman and learning the system. This summer he knows what to do. He's been through camp. He's been through spring ball. It's just getting comfortable with the position.?

Two starters must be replaced in the secondary ? cornerback Dee Milliner and safety Robert Lester ? but Mosley likes what he is seeing from the unit behind him.

?They're just competing, with the wide receivers or in their own drills,? Mosley said. ?They're coachable, so that's the main thing for them. They have to be coachable. And they're doing what they have to do to get on the field whether it's special teams or going against each other and learning from players like HaHa (Clinton-Dix) and Vincent (Sunseri) and things like that.?

Clinton-Dix is a junior safety who started 10 games last season. He?s stepping up, according to Mosley.

?He took more of a leadership role just based on knowing what you have to do and kind of accepting the fact that people are going to be looking up to him as far as the secondary,? Mosley said.

?Even though Lester left, even though Mark Barron left, he's kind of taken that role like, 'I'm the leader. I have to show the players how to do the right things.??

Health News - Scientists turn to statistics to solve Mexico's water ...

By Pristine Ong - The world's insatiable demand for water has reached a point, says the World Health Organization, where water scarcity now affects one in three people on every continent of the globe - and the situation gets worse with every passing year.

The pressure on global water supplies, a product of population growth, urbanisation and increased demand, has led scientists to search for solutions among the huge amount of data being collected about rainfall and streamflow.

But as information tools become more sophisticated, the abundance of data can be overwhelming. In Mexico, Associate Professor Willem Vervoort from the University of Sydney is working with local scientists to provide training in how to interpret their water data.

"Water science is all about data," says Vervoort, an Associate Professor in Hydrology and Catchment Management in the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment. "Without data, you cannot understand the systems and you cannot make future forecasts."

Like Australia, Mexico has complicated water issues. While one region of the country experiences severe drought, another region can have a surplus of water.

Professor Vervoort says: "For Mexico, the challenge is to analyse and synthesise this information so that they can predict water use and supply."

Supported by AusAID and the University's International Program Development Fund, Professor Vervoort is working with the Mexican Institute of Water Technology (IMTA), running virtual workshops and exchanges designed to teach Mexican researchers about forecasting in hydrology and statistics.

Professor Vervoort's research team will soon be welcoming four people from Mexico who have themselves gathered data on the ground. He says: "They are not just being trained on cleaned Australian data, but they are learning to work with real Mexican data - warts and all."

He says: "New technology can be very exciting because it helps us deal with difficulties from translating science to practical applications. If you are not sure that what you have observed is actually real, then making a prediction becomes really difficult. Better data gives more certainty in the forecasts. We are trying to know more from less, but with the availability of more data, we can now quantify dependent variables."

With the aid of mobile phones, he also hopes that farmers in Mexico will be able to improve their communication with IMTA, as well as access rainfall predictions. Despite water data being collected all across Mexico, there are still some gaps in information and in actually analysing the data.

"For example," says Professor Vervoort, "a rain gauge can only tell you if it has rained in one location, but if it is dry at a farm a few kilometres away, the rain gauge won't pick that up. With the use of mobile phones, farmers will be able to get information from IMTA quickly but also input more qualitative information about their firsthand experience."

Through his work, Professor Vervoort hopes to continue building the University's relationship with Mexico as well as other Latin American countries. He says: "Compared to Australia, Mexico has more poverty and more people, which gives us more scope for capacity building with farmers and academics."

The App Hole: Google Chromecast ? A New Challenger Appears!

You have to hand it to Google. They?re developing an almost Apple-esque way of generating buzz for their mobile devices.

Last week, Google introduced the Chromecast, a simple HDMI device born out of the ashes of their aborted Nexus Q. Like the Q, Chromecast streams content from YouTube, Netflix and Google Play onto your TV, controlled by your Android or Apple smartphone or tablet. Unlike the $300 Nexus Q, Chromecast has made it to market (Google sacked the Nexus Q months before it was due to go to retail) at a far more manageable $35. Within hours, Chromecast was completely sold out at Google and its retail partners Amazon and Best Buy, and was selling for nearly triple its retail price on eBay. An offer of three free months of Netflix with the purchase of a Chromecast had to be rescinded due to overwhelming demand. So with all that on its shoulders, and with a marketplace already defined by the Roku, AppleTV, and countless Smart TVs and Blu-Ray players, does the Chromecast live up to the hype? Yes, and no.

First, a huge positive: setup is dead simple. The Chromecast connects to your TV through HDMI and is powered by an included USB cable. For wall-mounted TVs, a short HDMI extension cable is included to allow the Chromecast to sit flush with the wall. For TVs without a USB port, Google also includes a power adapter. Once everything is plugged in, setup is done in two steps via the web or the Chromecast app for Android and iOS. Then you can start streaming. The stream is set up via your mobile device, but it?s the Chromecast that does all the work, freeing your phone or tablet for checking e-mail or taking calls once the video or audio starts.

The second positive is that features are being added to the device, even a week after release. A feature that allows users to share a tab of the Google Chrome browser via Chromecast opens up a world of media apps that can now more easily be streamed to TV, such as Hulu or Amazon Instant Video.

This feature, however, is still very much in beta, and thus works inconsistently. While some Chromecast owners have had it work perfectly, my own testing showed that video would freeze within 15 seconds, while audio would continue to play normally. Others have seen the opposite happen. While Google is going for geek cred right out of the gate, the Average Joe isn?t likely to be patient if features like this don?t work as intended. In time the bugs should be ironed out, but until then it?s a disappointing state of affairs and a glaring lack of finish for the product.

While the Chromecast still has a way to go before it?s as powerful a device as the Apple TV, the potential is there for this to be a major player in the media landscape, at about a third the cost. Google released developer tools that will allow other media apps to stream to Chromecast, so it may not be long before Hulu Plus and HBO Go are available. Third-party developers are already testing an app that will stream photos and video taken on your phone to Chromecast. The possibilities are endless thanks to the large developer community Google has encouraged and embraced.

For the average user who hasn?t bought a wealth of media from iTunes, the Chromecast is a worthwhile purchase that may very well become a must-own in a few months.

???

Since the Chromecast takes over playing video, you can feel free to tweet your YouTube recommendations to @UnwinnableDonB. Nothing involving two girls and one cup, please.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is set to tell disabled veterans that the government is making progress in reducing the backlog of disability claims.

He also planned to discuss research into traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide among veterans and troops, as well as efforts to help veterans earn college degrees or get the credentials needed to compete for high-skilled jobs.

Also scheduled to speak Saturday before the Disabled American Veterans' convention in Orlando, Fla., was first lady Michelle Obama. She and Vice President Joe Biden's wife, Jill, are leading a national effort to rally public support for military families.

A main concern for veterans is the staggering backlog of disability claims for compensation for illness and injury caused by military service.

The number of claims waiting to be processed ballooned under Obama, largely because the administration made it easier for Vietnam veterans who were exposed to the Agent Orange defoliant to get benefits.

The backlog recently has begun to shrink due to steps by the Department of Veterans Affairs, including requiring claims processors to work overtime and transitioning to a new computer system to help speed the judgment of claims. About 780,000 claims are pending. Currently, about 500,000 are considered backlogged, down from about 611,000 in March.

A claim is deemed backlogged if it has been in the system for 125 days, or roughly four months.

The Disabled American Veterans organization, which helps veterans access benefits, generally has applauded the administration for taking steps to address the backlog. The group also has been a strong defender of VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, who has promised to wipe out the claims backup by 2015.

Beyond the backlogged claims, Republican lawmakers have begun to hammer the department on the issue of patient safety. A congressional hearing in Atlanta this past week focused on poor patient care linked to four deaths. Another hearing is scheduled for next month in Pittsburgh, where five veterans died as a result of a Legionnaire's disease outbreak in 2011-12.

Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, said he hoped Obama would use his appearance at the convention to make a personal commitment to solving both issues.

In his remarks, Obama also was expected to reaffirm the administration's commitment to winning ratification of U.N. treaty encouraging countries to ensure that those with disabilities have equal rights and fundamental freedoms.

Led by Republican opposition, the Senate rejected the treaty last December, falling five votes short of the number needed for ratification.

Dogs training to sniff out ovarian cancer

PHILADELPHIA

Researchers trying to develop a diagnostic tool for ovarian cancer are hoping dogs' keen sense of smell will lead them down the right path.

An early detection device that combines old-fashioned olfactory skills, chemical analysis and modern technology could lead to better survival rates for the disease, which is particularly deadly because it's often not caught until an advanced stage.

In this Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013 photo, Jonathan Ball practices with Tsunami in the first round of training for a study that will eventually involve detecting cancerous tissue at Penn Vet Working Dog Center in Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke)

Using blood and tissue samples donated by patients, the University of Pennsylvania's Working Dog Center has started training three canines to sniff out the signature compound that indicates the presence of ovarian cancer.

If the animals can isolate the chemical marker, scientists at the nearby Monell Chemical Senses Center will work to create an electronic sensor to identify the same odorant.

"Because if the dogs can do it, then the question is, Can our analytical instrumentation do it? We think we can," Monell organic chemist George Preti said.

More than 20,000 Americans are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year. When it's caught early, women have a five-year survival rate of 90 percent. But because of its generic symptoms ? weight gain, bloating or constipation ? the disease is more often caught late.

About 70 percent of cases are identified after the cancer has spread, said Dr. Janos Tanyi, a Penn oncologist whose patients are participating in the study. For those women, the five-year survival rate is less than 40 percent, he said.

The Philadelphia researchers will build on previous work showing that early stage ovarian cancer alters odorous compounds in the body. Another study in Britain in 2004 demonstrated that dogs could identify bladder cancer patients by smelling their urine.

Dr. Leonard Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, said while the canine concept has shown promise for several years, there haven't been any major breakthroughs yet.

"We're still looking to see whether something could be developed and be useful in routine patient care, and we're not there yet," said Lichtenfeld, who is not involved in the study.

Cindy Otto, director of the Working Dog Center, hopes to change that with the help of McBaine, a springer spaniel; Ohlin, a Labrador retriever; and Tsunami, a German shepherd.

"If we can figure out what those chemicals are, what that fingerprint of ovarian cancer is that's in the blood ? or maybe even eventually in the urine or something like that ? then we can have that automated test that will be less expensive and very efficient at screening those samples," Otto said.

Ovarian cancer patient Marta Drexler, 57, is heartened by the effort. Drexler describes herself as a textbook case of the disease not being detected early enough because she had no symptoms.

After two surgeries and two rounds of chemotherapy, Drexler said she didn't hesitate when Dr. Tanyi, her physician, asked her to donate tissue to the study. Last week, she visited the Working Dog Center to meet the animals whose work might one day lead to fewer battles like hers.

"To have the opportunity to help with this dreadful disease, to do something about it, even if it's just a tiny little bit of something, it's a big thing," said Drexler, of nearby Lansdowne.

The ovarian cancer detection study is being funded by an $80,000 grant from the Madison, N.J.-based Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation.

Disputes lead Obama to back out of Russian summit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The common ground between the U.S. and Russia ? and Presidents Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin ? has been shrinking steadily in spite of the much-touted "reset" of relations between the old Cold War foes. And it just got even smaller.

The latest blow to improving relations came Wednesday when Obama, annoyed with Putin's decision to grant temporary asylum to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, canceled a face-to-face summit with the Russian leader. While U.S. and Russian foreign and defense ministers will sit down in Washington later this week, Obama won't be going to Moscow next month.

The Snowden decision was only the final straw in disputes that the White House cited for a lack of "recent progress." The U.S. and Russia have been at odds over the Syrian civil war, Russia's domestic crackdown on civil rights, a U.S. missile defense plan for Europe, trade, global security, human rights, even adoptions of Russian children by Americans.

"We looked at the utility of the summit in light of a number of issues and a number of challenges that we've encountered and decided that it did not make sense to have that bilateral summit in Moscow in September," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters returning with Obama Wednesday on Air Force One from a trip to California.

Noting that the U.S. and Russia cooperate on other matters, including the supply of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Carney said the relationship "should not be viewed entirely in a black-and-white fashion." He added, "Even when we've made progress in some areas in our relations with Russia we have continued to encounter disagreement in other areas, and I expect that will be the case going forward."

The Kremlin responded quickly to the canceled summit, voicing its own disappointment and blaming it on Washington's inability to develop relations with Moscow on an "equal basis." Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, added that the decision was "clearly linked" to the Snowden case, a situation that he said wasn't of Russia's making.

While Snowden might have been the immediate catalyst for canceling the summit, the seeds of renewed U.S.-Russia discord were planted more than a year ago when Putin regained the Russian presidency. On returning to power, he adopted a deeply nationalistic and more openly confrontational stance toward the United States than had his chosen successor, Dmitry Medvedev, whose 2008-12 tenure roughly overlapped Obama's first term in the White House.

Where Medvedev abstained in a U.N. Security Council vote that authorized NATO airstrikes in Libya, Putin has refused repeated entreaties from Washington to allow the world body to impose even minimal sanctions on President Bashar Assad's Syria. At the same time, Putin's government has continued to supply its ally Assad with weapons. And it has not delivered on pledges to coax Assad into sending representatives to talks with the opposition aimed at finding a political solution to the 2-year-old Syrian conflict.

Obama sought to cultivate Medvedev as a friend of the United States, making significant changes to Bush administration plans for European missile defense to try to ease Russian concerns about that project, signing a new arms control treaty and famously sending then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva, where she proclaimed a "reset" in U.S.-Russia relations.

Putin, however, seems to want none of the coziness that a "reset" would bring and has actively sought to undo previous agreements on cooperation. Under Putin, Russia has stepped up its negative rhetoric on missile defense, ended two decades of democracy and civil society training by the U.S. Agency for International Development and banned adoptions of Russian children by Americans.

Andrew Kuchins, a political scientist and expert on Russian politics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said he thinks the reset has been on hold for a while.

"We hit the peak at the end of 2010, and then things started going downhill gradually in 2011," Kuchins said. "Then, when the announcement was made that Putin was coming back as president in the fall of 2011, the downfall of the reset got a little steeper. "

But he said he does not think that Putin wants to trash the U.S.-Russia relationship and doesn't think relations are as bad as they were after the Georgia war in the fall of 2008 and 2009. In 2008, Georgia and Russia fought a brief war after Georgia launched an intense artillery barrage on the capital of South Ossetia, and Mikhail Saakashvili, the president of the former Soviet republic, forged a deeper relationship with the U.S.

"That was a pretty dangerous moment for the relationship," Kuchins said. "Right now, I don't see such a dangerous moment in the relationship, but we have some fundamental disagreements on nuclear security, missile defense, Syria. I don't think the Russians are taking positions just to counter us, undermine us. But they have some fundamental differences. They have a different way of looking at some things."

Ivo Daalder, former U.S. ambassador to NATO and now president of The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, said some positive steps have come from the reset, including Russia's willingness to help the U.S. transport military materiel in and out of Afghanistan.

"There still is cooperation on areas like Iran, where Russia voted four times in the U.N. Security Council to impose new sanctions," Daalder said. "There is cooperation on North Korea ? Russia has voted for new sanctions. And those are material, positive steps in the relationship that have been the result of the reset."

But he said that a reset also suggests a future relationship and that despite meetings Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and former National Security Adviser Tom Donilon have had with Russian officials, there has been little progress on Syria, nuclear arms reduction and missile defense issues.

In April, Obama asked Donilon to hand-deliver a letter to Putin, proposing new ways to cooperate. Ushakov, Putin's foreign affairs adviser, said Obama's letter was "quite constructive" and contained specific proposals regarding arms control and economic cooperation.

But Daalder said Russia's responses to the letter have been "either nonexistent or negative."

Putin and Obama last met in June, on the sidelines of the summit of the Group of Eight industrial nations.

Putin said then that he believed the U.S. and Russia had an "opportunity to move forward on most sensitive directions."

Obama said then that the two nations were poised to increase trade and investment and had pledged to continue to work together to counter potential threats of proliferation and to enhance nuclear security.

"I think this is an example of the kind of constructive, cooperative relationship that moves us out of a Cold War mindset," Obama said.

That was just seven weeks ago.

On Tuesday, a day before he canceled his meeting with Putin, Obama said on NBC's "The Tonight Show" that there have been times when the Russians "slip back into Cold War thinking and a Cold War mentality."

India Day Parades to Insult India in USA: Funded by Indian Tax Payers

India's premier Public enterprises; Ministry of Tourism, Air India, State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India are funding FIA, controlled by people with no vision & honesty from one religion, one community and one region of India Gujarat; doing Insult India Parade in New York ?in the name of Indian Independence Day Celebrations. These Public enterprises are forgetting that India is a multi religious country with 29 states. By financing FIA they are promoting racism with Indian Tax Payers money in America besides misuse of public funds by FIA controllers for personal promotion.?Indian Public must demand explanation.

http://southasianinsider.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-murky-business-of-india-day-parades.html?READ ON SOUTHASIAN INSIDER

FIA:?Officials violating US Laws for a non-profit organization by taking Political sides

OTIBA:?Sash wearing Political Asaylee in USA who claimed Indian govt tormented him & TV Asia owner H R Shah, Edison Mayor Toni with no clue why she is there!

IBA: Sash & Badge wearing American of PAKISTANI origin & Senator Sam Thompson who has never helped any Indian victim. None of these people other than Bollywood star can be paraded any where for any cause. Even the paradees of Rajasthan's Pushkar Mela will refuse to be paraded with them.

IDPUSA:?The Sash & Badge wearing speaking for themselves they are the one to be paraded in Hicksville. They have no clue about the rich culture and diversity of India.

The Murky Business of?India?Day Parades in NY & NJ (The South Asian Insider News)

Every year the number of India Day Parades being organized in NY & NJ are increasing. The oldest organizer is FIA followed by IBA and then OTIBA. The latest entrant to this Band wagon is IDPUSA of Hicksville founded by 3 controversial characters; one gave money from a non profit organization meant for medicines for poor to IDPUSA for the parade, one is a County employee and publisher of English weekly with murky financial dealings and the third one is running a chain of restaurants on County properties.

If we take a quick look the only purpose of these Parades is to make a quick name as well as quick money or monetary favors for the organizers or to dispense monetary favors to the favorite vendors; with least amount of efforts as well as a chance for them to be close to Bollywood celebrities, local officials and politicians. In nut shell none of these organizations have any thing to do with rich culture and traditions of India or its 30 states or its religious diversity. All they do is parade themselves, their families, friends, vendors, Bollywood star, local officials and US politicians in these Insult India Parades. Some of them being paraded have taken Political Asylum in USA by labeling India as a tormentor state and some are of Pakistani origin.

Especially India Day Parade by FIA in New York and IBA & OTIBA in New Jersey is nothing but a vulgar Bollywood Parade organized by self proclaimed Leaders of Gujarati Samaj for themselves, their sponsors and supporters. It has become a mindless affair for local politicians & Photo Hungry Desi (PHD) Leaders posing as Indian Community Leaders along with their supporters who can not be paraded for any cause any where in the world including the world famous Pushkar Mela of Rajasthan in India. Most pathetic is dominance of Bollywood Star as Grand Marshal supported by office bearers of FIA, IBA & OTIBA with doubtful integrity, who are stealing from community organizations and selling its honor & dignity. Every year chaos reigned right at the beginning of the parade with hordes of badge and sash wearing majority Gujarati Office Bearers, their Sponsors and friends breaking the cordons to be near the Bollywood Star the so called Grand Marshal for the Parade. All that the parade viewers on the sidelines could see is an unruly mass of organizers, sponsors & their friends behaving like animals rolling down the avenue along with meaningless floats. Noisy and vulgar Bollywood numbers blare from each of the floats with barely clad performers, most of which did not necessarily portray any theme representing India or its culture or its Independence Day.

These meaningless & irrelevant floats; no where reflects the rich culture and heritage of Maa Durga?s India or?Lord Krishna?s India?or?Guru Nanak Dev Ji?s India?or?Jesus Christ?s India?or?Prophet Mohammad?s India. Nor do they reflect?Mahatama Gandhi?or?Sardar Patel?or?Abdul Kalam?or?Ratan Tata?or?Azim Premji?s modern India. Nor do these floats reflect contribution of Indian American?s like Dr Sam Pitroda, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Nora Jones, Prof Jagdish Bhagwati, Prof Amartya Sen, Har Gobind Khorana, Prof Sunil Khilnani, Indra Nooyi, Victor Menenzes, H P Rama, B U Patel, Umang Gupta, Vikram Pundit, Ajay Banga, Vinod Khosla, Vinod Dham, Sonny Mehta, Karsh Kale, Mira Nair, Bharat Desai, Sameer Parekh, Sucheta & Anil Kapuria etc. in the American society and economy.

FIA, IBA & OTIBA are destroying the name and image of that very country India they say they love by organizing mindless and vulgar parades in the name of India Day Parade to show case themselves, their families, friends and vendors. Then they do not believe in transparency, accountability and democratically elected office bearers representing every Indian state and religion with term limits or publishing their accounts on their web sites. FIA has surpassed all the limits one of its Trustee is a proclaimed offender absconding from India and one of its Chairman was arrested on 7-17-13 by US FED for money laundering, bribery and other offenses; each attract min. 20yrs prison time.

If we take a close looks at the finances of FIA that claims to be the organizer of largest India Day Parade outside India; people will be shocked to see how they are misusing and plundering public money. As per IRS form 990 filed by FIA in 2011 their Insult India Parade cost them $357,000.?This does not include the Free Air Tickets or Hotel accommodation or other favors FIA got from India's national carrier Air India or other Indian public sector organizations.?For 2012 Form 990 is not available or has yet to be filed by FIA.?Surprisingly the Sikh Day Parade that has the practically same number of floats made by the same vendor and same number as well as same marching Bands, cost only $85,000.?The Sikh Day Parade is well organized with the right message?with more than plenty free food, water and snacks for Indians as well as locals. According to Form 990; FIA executives has spent?$25,479 on Reception & Banquet?and?$25,865 for Video coverage, flowers, trophies, Badge & sashes for them selves,?their friends & sponsors. Another?$89,635 was spent on occupancy and travel,?$10,967 on conference and meetings by FIA.?A whopping $49,043 is paid to scantily clad performers to do vulgar Bollywood numbers;?who really love India!

Only FIA or its lunatic supporters/sponsors can explain what is occupancy and why they need to plunder public funds on their own comforts and image building. What's the need to organize Grand Shameful Gala's in luxury Banquet Halls costing over $25,000.00 or for video coverage for $10,000.00 or $11,000.00 on meetings or $90,000 on occupancy & travel or $49,000.00 to performers or $4000.00 on trophies? May be to reward office bearers, trustees, friends, spouse, Caterers, DJ's, and other vendors. It's also no secret how these Parades are being funded with US Non Profit, Indian Public Sector organizations and Public money with middlemen taking commission on the funds raised.

FIA, IBA & OTIBA can spend millions on a senseless Parade but can not give Scholarships to deserving students from less fortunate families from the community. They can only talk about Indian culture and heritage but can not give scholarship or recognition or even a performing platform to US born Indian Americans who can play the musical instruments of their ancestors, can perform Indian Classical Dances and can recite songs in classical music in various Indian languages. When FIA, IBA & OTIBA can not give recognition or platform to such US born cultural Ambassadors of Indian culture how one can expect them to have any respect for Indian Culture and Heritage?

People who understand public service and are capable of bringing good for the Indian & American community are side lined because they are not willing to bow to the dictates of Photo Hungry Desi (PHD) organizers from FIA, IBA?& OTIBA especially from one community and one state of India.

There should be a public debate on the needs for these Parades that is not serving any purpose to the community. FIA, IBA & OTIBA has lost credibility, it is the opinion of many American Indians that India Day Parade should only be organized by the Indian Consul General?s office in New York. India Day Parade must reflect Indian culture and no politician or sponsor or so called Indian Leader or organizer should be paraded in the Parade; they can all stand at the VIP stand only. Adults and children of Indian origin who have achieved some thing in their lives and have made positive contributions to the society should walk on the Parade route as well as ride on the floats. All Floats must reflect the rich culture and heritage of India and contributions of Indian Americans of all walks of life representing different states and religions of India. All proceeds from the Parade must be utilized to create a fund for Scholarships for students of economically weaker section of Indian American community of NY & NJ and promotion of Indian culture and traditions in America.

Hazare Balan Gen Singh Amb Rao & CG Mulay to join Insult India Parade in New York on Aug.18, 2013

According to media reports Anna Hazare,?Vidya Balan,?India's Ambassodor to?USA?Nirupama Rao, Consul General in?New York?Dnyaneshwar Mulay?and retd. Gen. V K Singh are going to Share the Dias with most Corrupt & Racist?FIA; the organizers of Annual Insult India Parade in New York on Aug. 18, 2013.

?

It is very shocking to know that Shri Anna Hazare Ji is going to participate in Insult India Parade organized by FIA in the name of India Day Parade by racist and corrupt posing as self proclaimed Leaders from Gujarati community. ?FIA has no vision for India or its culture or traditions is buying legitimacy by bringing Shri Anna Hazare Ji to their annual Insult India Parade. No high achiever self made Indian as well as American practicing high moral and ethical values wants to participate in this parade that is nothing but an insult to India and every Indian around the world.

?

As far as Vidya Balan is concerned it looks like she doesn't care where she is walking for money or with whom she is walking! She has no idea about?FIA?owner Ramesh Patel & his lunatic supporters; how much they respect women.?But Anna Hazare will certainly lose his credibility (whatever is left) by walking along with people of questionable characters.?Same applies to the controversial & Tainted retd. Discovery hammered for shark special

NEW YORK (AP) ? A Discovery network special that speculated about whether a giant prehistoric shark could still exist has drawn a passionate response from viewers and starkly raised the question about the worth of big ratings.

The program, "Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives," opened Discovery's annual "Shark Week" during the weekend. With an estimated 4.8 million viewers, it had the largest audience of any show in the 26 years that Discovery has made "Shark Week" a part of its summer programming, the Nielsen company said.

Yet it drew a heated response online from viewers who said airing a "mockumentary" compromises the network's reputation.

"It's the ultimate 'Shark Week' fantasy," said Michael Sorensen, Discovery's senior director of programming. "The stories have been out there for years, and with 95 percent of the ocean unexplored, who really knows?"

Discovery's "Shark Week" Web page and Facebook and Twitter sites filled after the show with complaints from fans who objected to the program, saying they were surprised a science-based network seriously discussed the existence of a fearsome creature when there is no evidence it exists today. The "Megalodon" special was reminiscent of two shows on sister network Animal Planet about mermaids, which also got big audiences.

In a blog post, actor Wil Wheaton said he is a regular viewer of "Shark Week" but he was disgusted by the show. He said Discovery owes an apology to viewers who have grown to trust the network for its presentation of science.

"Discovery Channel betrayed that trust during its biggest viewing week of the year," Wheaton wrote. "Discovery Channel isn't run by stupid people, and this was not some kind of a mistake. Someone made a deliberate choice to present a work of fiction that is more suited for the SyFy channel as a truthful and factual documentary. That is disgusting."

Discover magazine's Christie Wilcox wrote that the show's "evidence was faked, the stories fabricated, and the scientists portrayed on it were actors. The idea that Megalodon could still be roaming the ocean is a complete and total myth."

Wilcox wrote that "You used to expose the beautiful, magical, wonderful sides of the world around us. Now, you just make (stuff) up for profit. It's depressing. It's disgusting. It's wrong."

At the end of the special, Discovery aired three disclaimers. Discovery said that none of the institutions or agencies that appear in the film is affiliated with it in any way. The network also said that "though certain events and characters in this film have been dramatized, sightings of 'submarine' continue to this day." Discovery would not say what events that referred to.

"Megalodon was a real shark," Discovery told viewers. "Legends of giant sharks persist all over the world. There is still debate about what they may be."

For Discovery, the question is whether the short-term achievement of high ratings is worth the risk of alienating long-time fans.

People watch Discovery to explore the "what ifs" of the world, said network spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg. The special "used a novel storytelling device to engage that imagination and curiosity in a way that was disclosed to audiences throughout the program," she said.

"We have found that people are open to exploring different ideas and concepts in addition to the more traditional fare that we air," Goldberg said. "That would explain the ratings. As in any entertainment, you aren't going to always please everyone, but we stand behind all of our content and are proud of it."

Sorensen talked before "Shark Week" about embracing the annual programming stunt as a pop culture event. For the first time, Discovery is showing a nightly "Shark Week" talk show hosted by a comedian.

Sony's special edition red laptops coming to the US, prices start at $2,000

Sony's special edition red laptops coming to the US, prices start at $2,000

Earlier this summer, Sony took its new laptops and put out special-edition versions with a glossy Ferrari-red finish. At the time, those machines were only available in Japan and Europe, but now Sony's US division is getting in on the action too, with a limited quantity going on sale today here in the states. All told, the line includes the Fit 15, the Pro 13 and the Duo 13 slider (read: about half of Sony's total notebook lineup). What's interesting is that although the color is the same from one model to another, Sony had to change up the painting process and pigment combinations depending on whether the machine was made of carbon fiber, aluminum or some other material. Either way, they each have a UV coating on top (sort of the equivalent of a manicure topcoat), so presumably that fancy paint job won't chip as soon as you take your PC out of the box.

Spec-wise, your mileage will vary depending on whether you get a Fit mainstream laptop or a Pro-series Ultrabook. In brief, though, they all come with Core i7 processors and 1080p touchscreens, except the Fit 15 has 12GB of RAM, a 2GB GPU, Blu-ray drive and 256GB SSD, whereas the two smaller models have eight gigs of memory and 512GB SSDs. At any rate, we hope you really, really like red: the Fit 15 goes for $2,000, the Pro 13 for $2,600 and the Duo 13 for $3,000. Congrats on that disposable income, folks!

Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends HD for iPad Review

Gear Diary Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends HD for iPad Review photo

Alchemy Mysteries

Sometimes a title tells you all you need to know about a game ? in the case of G5?s Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends, we know it is a casual game because of G5, that it is a mystery involving alchemy, that it looks back into history and that it takes place in Prague. We quickly also learn that the game centers around an orphan named Eva who returns to Prague to claim an inheritance and hopefully learn more about her past and her real family. But just after entering the house strange and mysterious things occur! Let?s take a look!

Type of app: Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure (HOPA) Game

Platform/where to buy: iPad (iPhone version here); available in the iTunes App Store

Developer: JetDogs Studios / G5 Entertainment

Description:

? 42 enigmatic levels to play through
? 24 mesmerizing mini-games
? 15 inspiring achievements to earn
? Two difficulty levels: casual, advanced
? Game Center Support
? New iPad Retina Display Support
? iPhone 5 support

Major features: With many hidden object games, it seems like a limp framework of a story is draped over a standard set of gameplay mechanics, with ?good? and ?bad? games generally hinging on how well the mechanics play out. In fact, I have enjoyed drab stories with great mechanics quite often, but have always found that poor mechanics means a lousy game.

Until now. With Alchemy Mysteries, we have a game with some clunky mechanics, but an oddly engaging story that draws you in and makes up for the oddities in presentation and performance.

Pretty much everything in the game is standard genre fare, with hidden object areas and puzzles. The issues were with the implementation. There are inconsistencies in the graphical feedback system, with some items sparkling when interaction isn?t possible while others don?t sparkle when you CAN interact ? this leads to extra tapping around.

Also, when you try something that doesn?t work you get no feedback or suggestion: it just doesn?t work. You can think you have the right tool, so perhaps you aren?t hitting the right area or something. There is no way to know. These inconsistencies thread throughout the game, making it too often a confusing experience that has you questioning whether it is you or the game that is the cause of getting stuck.

Another point of confusion is the lack of distinction between single-use and multi-use items. In many hidden object games an item is gone when you use it ? sometimes it makes sense (like a plant used in a potion), other times not (scissors). I have gotten used to this in more recent games, but in Alchemy Mysteries I got stumped until I realized that one piece of paper held multiple clues ? and I came across it by pure luck while perusing the journal for other things!

The 3D panning view is a great addition, as it the explorable world. The way the developers laid things out and implemented the movement system makes it feel more like a traditional adventure game. Even though you are simply sliding from place to place, the impression is more immersive.

That immersion helps carry the story ? as noted you are trying to find your past and at the same time discovering things about yourself and your family you never knew. It is not obvious what is happening, and exploring and letting the plot unfold is a load of fun.

Ease of use/Overall performance: If you are familiar with the hidden object genre you will have no problem getting going with Alchemy Mysteries. It is a fairly standard genre game, with hidden object scenes, objects in rooms, puzzles, and so on. The only difference is the use of a fully 3D space, meaning that within a room you can turn left and right to interact.

Would use again/recommend?: Definitely! As I said, the mechanics are not the best butthe story is very well done and the overall experience is solid and worth playing.

Suggested changes/wish list for updates: Nothing

This is the Modem World: The sinister side of the '80s BBS

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

This is the Modem World The sinister side of the '80s BBS

Some of the following, for legal reasons, may or may not be fictional.

My first modem was a 300-baud Apple-Cat II. It was an expansion card for the Apple II and simply plugged into a phone line. It was, simply put, a bad-ass piece of technology that turned me into a total digital delinquent. While my parents thought I was innocently learning to code BBSes (bulletin board systems) I was actually learning how to get things for free and paving the way for software pirates, phone phreaks and straight-up frauds of the future.

The Apple-Cat II could connect to other Apple-Cat IIs at 1200 baud, which made file transfers pretty quick for the time. This meant we could trade entire games in about an hour. We'd log into bulletin board systems, share lists of things we had and set up times to dial one another to trade games. Usually a barter would take place -- your Aztec for my Hard Hat Mack. It was a lot like trading baseball cards, I imagine.
