Jordan: No news of activist held in Saudi Arabia

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Jordan says it has no official word from Saudi Arabia about one of its citizens apprehended by authorities there 50 days ago.

Jordanian foreign ministry spokeswoman Sabah Rafie told the Associated Press Monday that Jordan has yet to receive a formal response regarding the detention of Khaled Natour at Riyadh airport.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, his offices, and the Jordanian ambassador to Saudi Arabia have made repeated queries but to no avail, she said.

Youth activist Natour has protested outside the Saudi embassy in Amman against the Saudi-led military force that quashed protests in Bahrain. He later travelled to Saudi Arabia on a work visa but was detained upon arrival in Riyadh.

Al-Rafie said Natour's father contacted the ministry Sunday and wept because he has no news of his son.

Exceptional Advice To Build Up Your Internet Promotion | Eric Chua ...

Web marketing is quickly becoming the preferred method of marketing for numerous businesses. From online newsletters to static websites, it is so simple to use the Internet to market your product. Keep reading for ideas about how to use different communication methods in your marketing plan.

AJAX and Flash should be used very little. Although this may look great, and provides a flashy scene to your site, this is not something that helps your site get noticed by the search engines. Flash is unnecessary for SEO purposes, and a successful Internet site can engage customers without it.

Web marketing serves the ultimate purpose of problem recognition and solution. You should have a clear goal in mind when you throw your doors open for business. If your business is useful to others, tell them precisely why this is the case. If you can assist users with their issues they will end up making a purchase from you and referring you to friends.

TIP! If you regularly email current or potential customers, ensure that you change the links that you place in the emails once in a while. If your links are the same in all of your email communications, your customers will ignore them and possibly send your messages to their spam filters.

Send your free materials to various free online directories so you get some valuable advertising at no charge. IF you are giving away an e-zine, give it to a lot of different directories. There are also directories for e-books, articles and different things you publish online.

The small seller will find the large Internet marketplaces highly competitive. To stay ahead of the competition, adjust your prices often and take your competition?s prices into account when you do. It is also a good idea to set up an online storefront so your customers can access all of your products from one location.

One important aspect of Website marketing that web designers sometimes forget is that a website should be simple. Adobe Flash and other multimedia tools can be seductive to website owners, so professional website designers push these tools. Not everyone who wants to use your site will be able to, or want to, make use of the newest technologies. Potential customers shouldn?t have to download software just to view and use your site.

TIP! For every email you send out ? business or personal ? include your signature. This is like a business card, only printed on pixels instead of on paper.

Aim to provide people around the globe varying versions of your sites. This means that these different versions need to be in various languages. Doing so can result in a great deal of traffic that may translate into many more customers from around the world. Customers will be far more likely to purchase your products and services if you offer the information in their own languages.

Consider marketing your website as a forum or social gathering spot instead of just another business website. If you foster communication and socializing on your site, your visitors may return more often. People will remember the interaction, and come back for more again and again. Include graphics that people can copy and use on their sites to advertise yours.

Put serious thought into your site tags since they define your business to the world. Tags affect your search engine rankings, and the main heading tag will be visible to potential visitors. Poorly written website tags don?t convey the message that you need to send to draw and keep the reader?s attention.

TIP! In order to increase your income, you must increase the number of subscribers to your site. You can help to assess your site by beta testing two different versions with two different groups of subscribers.

As an Internet marketer, you want to become an expert on everything to do with your site. This will help you gain credibility since you will have a lot of correct information. If you claim you are an expert and you are not, most people will be able to see through your dishonest claims.

Offer discounted prices. This can be done by offering products at discounted prices if the customer purchases a certain amount of your products. Another way to entice a purchase is by saying that if they buy now, the price will be half off.

TIP! Make sure to update your site?s content frequently. If someone goes to your website and your content is old, they might think your business is failing and that they are wasting their time if they contact you.

Affiliate marketing involves using available software and modern technology. If your customers use more advanced software than you do, they will wonder why you haven?t upgraded. If you adopt new technologies quickly, you will present a better image to your customers.

Take the necessary time to learn about web design. CSS and HTML are a few of the key things to learn to begin designing websites; you can find information about these, and other components of web design, on the Internet. Try and dedicate 30 minutes a day and in a few weeks you should know some good basics to apply to your webpage.

Make sure that you do not spend too much on advertising. You don?t want to pay a lot for anything that isn?t helping your business. You should get the proper feedback and analysis of your online advertisements and break them down in terms of cost versus benefit. When the ratio gets unacceptable, it?s time to re-tool your marketing strategy.

TIP! Be sure to caption all images on your website. This provides keywords the search engines can index in order to determine how relevant each image is.

There is no need for Internet marketing to be overwhelming or confusing. Use the tips laid out here to help you get your name out on the Internet and market your company to the people in your target market in an efficient and quick way. Given that a significant number of consumers prefer to obtain information online, Affiliate marketing can help grow your business.

Liberal Watchdog Group: 'Fix The Debt' Movement More Astroturf Than Grassroots

The liberal watchdog group Center for Media and Democracy says Fix the Debt ? a key unit in philanthropist Pete Peterson's corps of organizations to battle the national debt ? is a pro-business effort masquerading as a grassroots movement.

In a conference call with reporters Friday, CMD director Lisa Graves called Fix the Debt "an Astroturf supergroup that is exceedingly well funded." The term "Astroturf" refers to groups that appear to be citizen-organized but actually have their roots at consultants' offices inside the Capital Beltway.

A spokesman for Fix the Debt hotly denies the charge. Jon Romano said the center got some of its facts wrong, adding, "It is unfortunate that some would rather cast aspersions and misrepresent this view than engage in a constructive conversation about tackling this very real problem. Demagoguing does nothing to protect the most vulnerable."

Fix the Debt is promoting a citizens' petition, with 346,000 names. CMD, which last year used leaked documents to report on the secretive American Legislative Exchange Council, traced the corporate ties and lobbying records of Fix the Debt leaders.

Among the co-founders, co-chairs and steering committee ? 13 people in all ? it found six who sit on corporate boards, including GE, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley; advisers to Goldman Sachs and the private equity firm KKR; and lobbyists for KKR, the Private Equity Growth Capital Council and U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Fix the Debt also has two well-populated advisory groups: a CEO council with about 90 members, and a Business Leaders Council of about 40.

"They really are posturing as a grassroots movement," says Graves. "They are putting forward this notion of these business leaders not as job creators, but as problem solvers on the economy ? when in fact the record shows that a lot of these companies are actively lobbying to keep tax loopholes open" and to promote other corporation-friendly policies.

CMD's analysis also appears in The Nation, in a package of stories on Peterson's long-running effort to move the national debt to the top of Washington's agenda.

HTC smartphone maker settles U.S. software security case

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - HTC America, which makes smartphones and tablets that use Android and Windows software, will settle a U.S. regulator's charges it failed to take adequate steps to eliminate security flaws that put millions of users' data at risk.

The Federal Trade Commission said on Friday that HTC America, a subsidiary of HTC Corp in Taiwan, made millions of phones with programming flaws that allowed third-party applications to evade Android's permission-based security model.

This means that the Android operating system, which normally requires users be provided notice if sensitive data is given to third parties like data brokers, was prevented from giving notice to users, according to the FTC.

Sensitive data includes location or the contents of text messages. The settlement requires the company to establish a comprehensive security program and patch the software holes.

HTC spokeswoman Sally Julien said the company, working with carrier partners, has addressed the identified security issues on majority of devices released in the United States after December 2010.

"We're working to roll out the remaining software updates now and recommend customers download them once available," Julien said.

The regulator said in a statement that HTC America "failed to provide its engineering staff with adequate security training, failed to review or test the software on its mobile devices for potential security vulnerabilities (and) failed to follow well-known and commonly accepted secure coding practices."

It said millions of HTC devices were compromised, "potentially permitting malicious applications to send text messages, record audio, and even install additional malware" without the knowledge or consent of the user.

In a Twitter question-and-answer session, the FTC said that while the HTC America case was not the first on data security unfairness, it was the first that dealt with software security.

Justified, Season 4

(L) Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder and (R) Timothy Olyphant as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens. Getting locked in a shed with Boyd by some hill people was actually one of the less-scary threats to Raylan's well-being this season on Justified.

?A lot of shocking things have happened on Justified this season: Arlo managed to kill someone in jail, Boyd and Ava ordered Colton to off Ellen May, and Raylan lost his girlfriend to a washed-up wannabe MMA fighter whose real dream was to manage cockfights. But perhaps the most shocking thing of all came at the beginning of Week 7?s ?Money Trap,? when the show flashed back to the point where Raylan handed double-homicide suspect Jody Adair over to bail bondswoman Sharon Edmunds. That moment would have come, chronologically, toward the end of Episode 1. So imagine my surprise when ?Six days ago? flashed on the screen to ground the reader in the time-setting. Six days? That means that the entirety of the season?seven episodes so far?has taken place over the course of about a week.

With all that?s happened, Raylan?s had a week to rival Jack Bauer. Let?s review:

Raylan?s long week starts when he gets a call from Sharon Edmunds, who offers him cash to track down Jody Adair. Raylan apprehends him that night. Meanwhile, two teenagers break into Arlo?s house, steal Raylan?s car (and Jody Adair, who?s in the trunk), and then later pull a gun on him. ?You just showed me your tits 45 minutes ago,? Raylan protests to Roz. At some point, he turns Adair over to Edmunds. This happened over parts of two days, but Raylan never slept.

Day 2: Raylan meets Lindsey?s supposedly former husband, and then gets guns pulled on him by the Truth kids. Still, this is a pretty uneventful day; maybe he had time to read a book or go bowling or something.

Day 3: He has sex with Lindsey, runs off Randall (or so he thinks), watches an FBI agent kill himself (but not before making it look like he might shoot Raylan), rescues Drew Thompson?s ?widow,? and returns home to find his apartment trashed and Lindsey?and his money?missing.

Day 4: He hunts down Bonnie and Clyde, loses Lindsey, cuffs Randall, and discovers that the ?goodly sum? he?s been socking away for his unborn child has been converted into a van full of chickens. On the bright side, he eventually gets a decent night?s sleep, and the only gunfight involves bean-bag rounds.

Day 5: Raylan is captured and locked in a shed with Boyd by some hill people, who quickly shoot at them. Boyd and Raylan scrap their way out, and Raylan talks the hill people into sparing their lives, right before he handcuffs Boyd to a tree. All night. ?Elsewhere, Josiah Cairn goes and gets his foot cut off and disappears, wrecking Raylan?s plans to cuddle up with a good book the next day.

Day 6: Raylan and his new friend Sheriff Shelby track down Josiah Cairn?in a truly Jack Bauer-esque moment?right as one of the morons who kidnapped him is cauterizing his stump with a blow torch. Shockingly, guns are drawn. Sheriff Shelby shoots one of Josiah?s kidnappers, wounding him.

Day 7: ?Raylan chases Joey Adair all over Lexington, scoops up a sweet young damsel in distress, and eventually confronts Adair at the Highnote. Like most of the people Raylan encounters this week, Adair tries to pull a gun. Raylan draws faster. Lights out.

So, what did you do this week? Is there a body count involved? Raylan?s week, by the numbers:

Killed in action: Sharon Edmunds, her partner, Agent Barnes, Jody Adair

Wounded: Roz (stabbed by Constable Bob), Josiah (chopped), the convenience store clerk (beat up by Randall), the bumbling idiot who chopped Josiah?s foot (shot but alive)

Kidnapped (and rescued): Josiah, Eve Munro

Op-Ed: Yes, I Have An STD, But It Shouldn't Be a Scarlet Letter

When I tell people what I do professionally ? I?m the founder of The STD Project, a website all about STDs from someone with an STD ? colorful responses abound. When I launched the site, the shock and utter loss for words I elicited even from friends and family was palpable, to say the least. Never mind the small bit of crazy it takes to spend one?s days brazenly telling others you have an unsightly disease that resides on your genitalia. To make matters worse, I quit an incredibly lucrative career to launch the site.

As an accountant working for a Big Four accounting firm, and then a Fortune 500 corporation, I?m certain my new vocational choice was far from anyone?s mind when I announced the website in April 2012. Understandably, my decision to replace a highly coveted career with a financially insecure and lofty goal had my loved ones worried. But my parents understood why I?d chosen to take action.

In Search of a Better Condom

Fourteen years ago, at 16, I contracted genital herpes. Diagnosed and shamed by my family doctor, I rode home with my mother in tears ? convinced I would never have a ?normal? sex life, a loving partner, or a healthy relationship ever again. In the years that followed, I was cast out of the church and labeled a harlot, made to sleep separately from friends during overnight stays for fear of transmission, and called a bevy of names. I was scarlet-lettered.

Rest assured, however, this is not a ?woe is me? kind of story. On the contrary, having herpes never stopped me from dating, having a (very) healthy sex life, or accomplishing my goals, despite my initial misconceptions. In some ways, it likely lit a necessary fire within me ? I?ve always been rather indignant and reticent toward social constructs ? so I set off to prove to others, and mostly to myself, that I deserved more and could be more than just a woman with genital herpes. Having auditioned for ?American Idol,? conquered my fear of heights by skydiving (three times), run a 25K, and earned two honors degrees, I?ve accomplished that.

So, when I launched The STD Project, I felt I was finally ready to tackle the embarrassment and shame I?d experienced years ago. I was healed, resilient, and could begin to forge a social movement despite the inevitable reproach headed my way. ?What I hadn?t anticipated was what happened in the months following the site's launch: an array of questions and earnest interest, an outpouring of support, and message upon message from family, friends, acquaintances, and strangers the world over sharing their personal and unmistakably paralleled sexual health and STD journeys.

Sharing my story with others, reading and listening to theirs, and honing my skills as an educator, speaker, and writer has also afforded me the peace I would have paid anything for years ago. Sometimes it feels selfish, attaining the healing ? healing I wasn?t aware I still needed ? that The STD Project has prompted.

Keeping me grounded is the realization that there?s still so much work to be done. Stigma abounds and people are made to feel like pariahs ? alone, ridiculed, and shunned when diagnosed ? the same stigma that paralyzed me, when what we really need are more education, awareness, and treatment.

So, I?m carrying on.

I am an STD advocate. I will continue to be an advocate until others don?t have to endure what was once, for me, a very arduous journey.

Sony promises Android 'second screen' app for PlayStation 4

PlayStation 4 Android apps

Sony (sorta) unveiled the PlayStation 4 last night in New York, and along with hardware, software and development details, the electronics giant talked about how the new console would tie into mobile devices. For Android and iOS, Sony said it'd bring "second screen" experiences to these devices.

Like Microsoft's "SmartGlass," the PS4 smartphone apps will allow gamers to bring relevant information to their mobile device whether they're in front of their console or not. In-game, the apps will be able to offer extra content like maps in an adventure game, Sony says. And when you're away from home, the app will tie into the PlayStation Network, allowing you to purchase games or peek in on your friends' games in real time. There's no mention of any PS Vita-style "remote play" option for smartphones just yet -- if something like this is to be offered on phones, it's likely it might be tied into Sony's existing PlayStation Mobile certification program.

The PlayStation 4 is due to appear in time for the holidays, and though we got a quick peek at its smartphone and tablet apps on-stage last night, the box itself was conspicuously absent.

What to Watch Tonight: The Series Premiere of Zero Hour, Will and Emma's Wedding on Glee, and the Launch of Reality Thursdays on AMC

What to watch on Thursday, February 14...

SERIES PREMIERE, 8pm, ABC
Zero Hour
Fans of cuckoopants genre dramas on Thursday nights, you lost a powerful asset when NBC axed Do No Harm after only 14 people watched it. But perhaps ABC can interest you in this new supernatural-mystery-time travel-thriller trail mix, seemingly conceived by a "high-concept TV"-themed edition of Apples to Apples. Clocks! Treasure maps! Nazis! Conspiracies! Anthony Edwards! Apocalypse! More clocks!

8pm, CBS
The Big Bang Theory
"The Tangible Affection Proof" finds Leonard planning a romantic Valentine's Day dinner for Penny. This strikes me as quixotic at best, considering such things are giant honking magnets for disruptive hijinks when you live in a sitcom. And oh look! Here come those hijinks in the forms of Howard, Bernadette, and Penny's ex-boyfriend!

8:30pm, NBC
Parks and Recreation
A citywide emergency preparedness drill thwarts Leslie's plans to raise money for the parks via a fancy soiree, though hopefully plans for Amy Poehler to dazzle in a cocktail dress remain intact. Elsewhere in "Emergency Response," Leslie's absence forces Ron to fill in on Pawnee Today, while Andy gears up to take the police academy entrance exam.

9pm, Fox
Glee
New Directioneers past and present gather to celebrate the Valentine's Day wedding of Will and Emma in "I Do." Spoiler alert: Will has written his own vows, which he will deliver via whiteboard.

WINTER PREMIERE, 9pm, AMC
Comic Book Men
The adventures of Kevin Smith and his fellow proprietors of ye olde comic shoppe resume as the crew makes plans to attend a cosplay MMA competition in "The Clash at the Stash." Say what you will about the titular men themselves, but isn't it heartening that AMC's reality shows can spotlight oft-maligned subcultures without resorting to broad, attention-grabbing pejoratives?

SERIES PREMIERE, 9:30pm, AMC
Freakshow
Um. May've spoken too soon. Life at California's Venice Beach Freakshow is explored, beginning with the team's efforts to enlist a living giant and a bearded lady for the two-headed bearded dragon's birthday party. Well, golly, AMC. Your new programming slate tonight can't get any more outr? than that, right?

SERIES PREMIERE, 10pm, AMC
Immortalized
Oh what in the actual living hell, AMC? Professional taxidermists compete against amateurs in this new reality series. Did you know that there was such a thing as amateur taxidermy? Well, now you do. You will carry that knowledge with you for the rest of your life, and you have AMC to thank.

SERIES PREMIERE, 10:30pm, MTV
Failosophy
In which comedians Nicole Byer, Mike Cannon, and Jared Freid are paid legal U.S. tender to discuss particularly noteworthy internet "fails" (as I'm given to understand is the parlance of today's youths), and consequently I am also paid to alert you to the existence of said discussion.

CBS 4Q results fall short of expectations

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? CBS Corp.'s revenue and earnings grew in the final quarter of the year, but the results fell short of analysts' forecasts, sending shares down in after-market trading.

Advertising revenue grew 3 percent, CBS said Thursday. The company pointed out that last year's licensing revenue bump from the sale of CW network shows to Netflix and Hulu wasn't repeated. Local broadcasting revenue grew less than expected and the Simon & Schuster book publishing business declined faster than analysts were bracing for.

Net income in the three months through Dec. 31 was $393 million, or 60 cents per share. That's up from $370 million, or 55 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding discontinued operations, adjusted earnings came to 64 cents per share. That was below the 69 cents expected by analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue grew 2 percent to $3.7 billion, below the $3.83 billion analysts were expecting.

The company also said it would double its share buyback program by $1 billion in 2013.

CBS is preparing to spin off its outdoor billboard business in North America into a real estate investment trust, which should return a high proportion of its cash flow to investors. It is also planning to sell its European outdoor operations.

Excluding the European operations, the outdoor billboard segment's revenue fell.

CBS' stock declined 84 cents, or 2 percent, to $42.10 in after-hours trading.

Meteor explodes over Russia's Ural Mountains; 1,000 injured as shock wave blows in windows

MOSCOW - A meteor streaked across the sky and exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains with the power of an atomic bomb Friday, its sonic blasts shattering countless windows and injuring about 1,100 people.

The spectacle deeply frightened many Russians, with some elderly women declaring that the world was coming to an end. Many of the injured were cut by flying glass as they flocked to windows, curious about what had produced such a blinding flash of light.

The meteor ? estimated to be about 10 tons ? entered the Earth's atmosphere at a hypersonic speed of at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph) and shattered into pieces about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above the ground, the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement.

Amateur video showed an object speeding across the sky about 9:20 a.m. local time, just after sunrise, leaving a thick white contrail and an intense flash.

"There was panic. People had no idea what was happening," said Sergey Hametov, a resident of Chelyabinsk, a city of 1 million about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow.

"We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud, thundering sound," he told The Associated Press by telephone.

The meteor hit less than a day before Asteroid 2012 DA14 is to make the closest recorded pass of an asteroid to the Earth ? about 17,150 miles (28,000 kilometers). But the European Space Agency said its experts had determined there was no connection ? just cosmic coincidence.

The meteor released several kilotons of energy above the region, the Russian science academy said. According to NASA, it was about 15 meters (49 feet) wide before it hit the atmosphere, about one-quarter the size of the passing asteroid.

Some meteorite fragments fell in a reservoir outside the town of Chebarkul. The crash left an eight-meter (26-foot) -wide crater in the ice.

The shock wave blew in an estimated 100,000 square meters (more than 1 million square feet) of glass, according to city officials, who said 3,000 buildings in the city were damaged. At one zinc factory, part of the roof collapsed.

The Interior Ministry said about 1,100 people sought medical care after the shock wave and 48 of them were hospitalized. Most of the injuries were caused by flying glass, officials said.

There was no immediate word on any deaths or anyone struck by space fragments.

Meteors typically cause sizeable sonic booms when they enter the atmosphere because they are traveling so much faster than the speed of sound. Injuries on the scale reported Friday, however, are extraordinarily rare.

"I went to see what that flash in the sky was about," recalled resident Marat Lobkovsky. "And then the window glass shattered, bouncing back on me. My beard was cut open, but not deep. They patched me up. It's OK now."

Another resident, Valya Kazakov, said some elderly women in his neighborhood started crying out that the world was ending.

Russian-language hashtags for the meteorite quickly shot up into Twitter's top trends.

Lessons had just started at Chelyabinsk schools when the meteor exploded, and officials said 258 schoolchildren were among those injured. Amateur video footage showed a teacher speaking to her class as a powerful shockwave hit the room.

Yekaterina Melikhova, a high school student whose nose was bloody and whose upper lip was covered with a bandage, said she was in her geography class when a bright light flashed outside.

"After the flash, nothing happened for about three minutes. Then we rushed outdoors. I was not alone, I was there with Katya. The door was made of glass, a shock wave made it hit us," she said.

Russian television ran footage of athletes at a city sports arena who were showered by shards of glass from huge windows. Some of them were still bleeding.

Other videos showed a long shard of glass slamming into the floor close to a factory worker and massive doors blown away by the shock wave.

The vast implosion of glass windows exposed many residents to the bitter cold as temperatures in the city were expected to plummet to minus 20 Celsius (minus 4 Fahrenheit) overnight.

The regional governor immediately urged any worker who can pane windows to rush to the area to help out.

Meteroids are small pieces of space debris ? usually parts of comets or asteroids ? that are on a collision course with the Earth. They become meteors when they enter the Earth's atmosphere. Most meteors burn up in the atmosphere, but if they survive the frictional heating and strike the surface of the Earth they are called meteorites.

The site of Friday's spectacular show is about 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) west of Tunguska, which in 1908 was the site of the largest recorded explosion of a space object plunging to Earth. That blast, attributed to a comet or asteroid fragment, is generally estimated to have been about 10 megatons; it leveled some 80 million trees.

Scientists believe that a far larger meteorite strike on what today is Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula may have been responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago. According to that theory, the impact would have thrown up vast amounts of dust that blanketed the sky for decades and altered the climate on Earth.

The meteor could have produced much more serious problems. Chelyabinsk is an industrial town long held to be one of the world's most polluted areas, and the area around it hosts nuclear and chemical weapons disposal facilities.

Vladimir Chuprov of Greenpeace Russia said the Russian government has underestimated potential risks of the region. He noted that the meteor struck only 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Mayak nuclear storage and disposal facility, which holds dozens of tons of weapons-grade plutonium.

A chemical weapons disposal facility at Shchuchye also contains some 6,000 tons (5,460 metric tons) of nerve agents, including sarin and VX, about 14 percent of the chemical weapons that Russia is committed to destroy.

The panic and confusion that followed Friday's meteorite crash quickly gave way to typical Russian black humor and entrepreneurial instincts.

Several people smashed in the windows of their houses in the hopes of receiving compensation, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Others quickly took to the Internet and put what they said were meteorite fragments up for sale.

One of the most popular jokes was that the meteorite was supposed to fall on Dec. 21 last year ? when many believed the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world ? but was delivered late by Russia's notoriously inefficient postal service.

The dramatic event prompted an array of reactions from prominent Russians.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, speaking at an economic forum in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, said the meteor could be a symbol for the forum, showing that "not only the economy is vulnerable, but the whole planet."

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a nationalist leader noted for his vehement statements, blamed the Americans.

"It's not meteors falling. It's the test of a new weapon by the Americans," the RIA Novosti news agency quoted him as saying.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the incident showed the need for leading world powers to develop a system to intercept objects falling from space.

"At the moment, neither we nor the Americans have such technologies" to shoot down meteors or asteroids, he said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Jim Green, NASA's director of planetary science, called the back-to-back celestial events an amazing display.

"This is indeed very rare and it is historic," he said on NASA TV. "These fireballs happen about once a day or so, but we just don't see them because many of them fall over the ocean or in remote areas. "

Report: Tracking system needed to fight fake drugs

(AP) ? Fighting the problem of fake drugs will require putting medications through a chain of custody like U.S. courts require for evidence in a trial, the Institute of Medicine reported Wednesday.

The call for a national drug tracking system comes a week after the Food and Drug Administration warned doctors, for the third time in about a year, that it discovered a counterfeit batch of the cancer drug Avastin that lacked the real tumor-killing ingredient.

Fake and substandard drugs have become an increasing concern as U.S. pharmaceutical companies move more of their manufacturing overseas. The risk made headlines in 2008 when U.S. patients died from a contaminated blood thinner imported from China.

The Institute of Medicine report made clear that this is a global problem that requires an international response, with developing countries especially at risk from phony medications. Drug-resistant tuberculosis, for example, is fueled in part by watered-down medications sold in many poor countries.

"There can be nothing worse than for a patient to take a medication that either doesn't work or poisons the patient," said Lawrence O. Gostin, a professor of health law at Georgetown University who led the IOM committee that studied how to combat the growing problem.

A mandatory drug-tracking system could use some form of barcodes or electronic tags to verify that a medication and the ingredients used to make it are authentic at every step, from the manufacturing of the active ingredient all the way to the pharmacy, he said. His committee examined fakes so sophisticated that health experts couldn't tell the difference between the packaging of the FDA-approved product and the look-alike.

"It's unreliable unless you know where it's been and can secure each point in the supply chain," Gostin said.

Patient safety advocates have pushed for that kind of tracking system for years, but attempts to include it in FDA drug-safety legislation last summer failed.

The report also concluded that:

?The World Health Organization should develop an international code of practice that sets guidelines for monitoring, regulation and law enforcement to crack down on fake drugs.

?States should beef up licensing requirements for the wholesalers and distributors who get a drug from its manufacturer to the pharmacy, hospital or doctor's office.

__Internet pharmacies are a particularly weak link, because fraudulent sites can mimic legitimate ones. The report urged wider promotion of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy's online accreditation program as a tool to help consumers spot trustworthy sites.

The Institute of Medicine is an independent organization that advises the government on health matters.

How To: Turn your iPad into a MacBook wannabe [Jailbreak]

Photo Feb 12, 5 40 06 PMSo, you want to use your iPad as a MacBook, but you have no idea where to start. See the screenshot above (and gallery below)? That is my iPad?s screen. Yes, iPad, not MacBook. This was accomplished by using a simple theme from Cydia that works with DreamBoard, an advanced theming application. Best part? The theme and DreamBoard are completely free. Here?s how:

  1. Install DreamBoard from Cydia.
  2. Install the ?Mountain Lion Ultimatum? theme from Cydia.
  3. Respring your device.
  4. Once back to the main home screen, locate ?DreamBoard?.
  5. Open and select ?Mountain Lion Ultimatum (Charity Theme)? from the selections.
  6. That?s it! It will apply the theme, and you will see the above screen (or something similar).

Photo Feb 13, 3 24 38 PM

Now, to take this to the next level, I also installed something named ?BTC Mouse & Trackpad? (screenshot above of the Cydia screen). If you look at the screenshots in the gallery, you will see a mouse on them that looks similar to that of the OS X mouse. That is thanks to this tweak. What it does is adds (as the name so obviously states) mouse and trackpad support to the native Bluetooth support found in iOS. This works with iPhones/iPod touches as well, if ?you want to use it there also. With this I was able to use my Magic Mouse and Hatch & Co. keyboard case to turn my iPad into a mini MacBook.

So there you have it, the most simple way possible to turn your iPad into a pseudo-MacBook. All of this except the BTC Mouse & Keyboard is completely free, with that tweak costing $4.98. If you feel you would use it, I highly recommend the tweak as it really gives the tablet a true computer feel. I was able to make an entire Keynote presentation in half the time it would have taken using solely touch. Let me know in the comments if you are installing this, and chat with me on Twitter @TiP_Kyle?about your experiences or other cool DreamBoard themes you found. Check out the gallery for more screenshots of the theme in action.

Can Money Buy Happiness? - wise self improvement | self ...

Money is an important part of our lives. It affects us in all areas, either directly or indirectly. Money can affect our relationships, our career choices, and so on. What thoughts come to your mind when you think about money?

Many of us are accustomed to think negatively about money. We have heard from our parents that "money doesn't grow on trees." Perhaps you have been told that the rich are greedy and you automatically avoid wealth.

The truth is, money is not good or bad. Money is often used for good things more often than for bad. Think of the charities that help people all over the world with large donations. Money is an important tool in our lives, and is often used for positive changes in the world.

But can money make you truly happy?

Money is just an idea. A piece of paper with a creative design we give a certain value that is accepted by all. With money alone you cannot buy happiness. Money doesn't keep friendships or makes you a better person. But money you spend wisely can influence your happiness.

We all know the saying "Money corrupts the character." But money is not meaningless. It helps you lead a more comfortable life. It's like with your health; you only worry about it if you don't have it. The most valuable luxury money can buy is that when you have it you don't have to worry about.

Safety derives from money and is therefore responsible for positive emotions. Money can protect you from negative circumstances. The best doctors cost money. A relaxing holiday must be paid for, as well as someone who helps you with your work, so you have more time for leisure activities. An advertising agency wants to make sure you buy as much of the products or services, they work on. Money gives you the freedom to decide.

As Groucho Marx puts it, "Money frees you from doing things you dislike."

Money should never be the most important thing in life. It can however enhance your life if you spend it properly. Above all, your happiness depends on what are you doing with your money. Do you spend it on things that increase your overall well-being? Although newly acquired things bring you joy for a moment, this happiness gets lost in time because you quickly get accustomed to them.

According to Mignon McLaughlin's The Second Neurotic's Notebook published in 1966, we all know what to do when a burglar asks "your money, or your life?" But we don't know what to say when God demands it from us.

If you spend your money on your relationships with partners, family and friends, your health and unforgettable moments, money can make your life truly happy.

Sunlight stimulates release of climate-warming gas from melting Arctic permafrost

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Ancient carbon trapped in Arctic permafrost is extremely sensitive to sunlight and, if exposed to the surface when long-frozen soils melt and collapse, can release climate-warming carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere much faster than previously thought.

University of Michigan ecologist and aquatic biogeochemist George Kling and his colleagues studied places in Arctic Alaska where permafrost is melting and is causing the overlying land surface to collapse, forming erosional holes and landslides and exposing long-buried soils to sunlight.

They found that sunlight increases bacterial conversion of exposed soil carbon into carbon dioxide gas by at least 40 percent compared to carbon that remains in the dark. The team, led by Rose Cory of the University of North Carolina, reported its findings in an article to be published online Feb. 11 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Until now, we didn't really know how reactive this ancient permafrost carbon would be -- whether it would be converted into heat-trapping gases quickly or not," said Kling, a professor in the U-M Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. EEB graduate student Jason Dobkowski is a co-author of the paper.

"What we can say now is that regardless of how fast the thawing of the Arctic permafrost occurs, the conversion of this soil carbon to carbon dioxide and its release into the atmosphere will be faster than we previously thought," Kling said. "That means permafrost carbon is potentially a huge factor that will help determine how fast the Earth warms."

Tremendous stores of organic carbon have been frozen in Arctic permafrost soils for thousands of years. If thawed and released as carbon dioxide gas, this vast carbon repository has the potential to double the amount of the heat-trapping greenhouse gas in the atmosphere on a timescale similar to humanity's inputs of carbon dioxide due to the burning of fossil fuels.

That creates the potential for a positive feedback: As Earth warms due to the human-caused release of heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere, frozen Arctic soils also warm, thaw and release more carbon dioxide. The added carbon dioxide accelerates Earth's warming, which further accelerates the thawing of Arctic soils and the release of even more carbon dioxide. Recent climate change has increased soil temperatures in the Arctic and has thawed large areas of permafrost. Just how much permafrost will thaw in the future and how fast the carbon dioxide will be released is a topic of heated debate among climate scientists.

Already, the melting of ground ice is causing land-surface subsidence features called thermokarst failures. A thermokarst failure is generated when ice-rich, permanently frozen soils are warmed and thawed. As the ice melts, the soil collapses and either creates an erosional hole in the tundra or -- if the slope is steep enough -- a landslide.

Thermokarst failures change the trajectory of the debate on the role of the Arctic in global climate, according to Kling and his colleagues. The unanticipated outcome of the study reported in PNAS is that soil carbon will not be thawed and degraded directly in the soils. Instead, the carbon will be mixed up and exposed to sunlight as the land surface fails.

Sunlight -- and especially ultraviolet radiation, the wavelengths that cause sunburn -- can degrade the organic soil carbon directly to carbon dioxide gas, and sunlight can also alter the carbon to make it a better food for bacteria. When bacteria feed on this carbon, they respire it to carbon dioxide, much the same way that people respire carbon in food and exhale carbon dioxide as a byproduct.

"Whether UV light exposure will enhance or retard the conversion of newly exposed carbon from permafrost soils has been, until recently, anybody's guess," said University of North Carolina's Cory, the study's lead author. "In this research, we provide the first evidence that the respiration of previously frozen soil carbon will be amplified by reactions with sunlight and their effects on bacteria."

"We know that in a warmer world there will be more of these thermokarst failures, and that will lead to more of this ancient frozen carbon being exposed to surface conditions," Kling said. "While we can't say how fast this Arctic carbon will feed back into the global carbon cycle and accelerate climate warming on Earth, the fact that it will be exposed to light means that it will happen faster than we previously thought."

The researchers analyzed water from seven thermokarst failures near Toolik Lake, Alaska, as well as 27 other undisturbed sites nearby.

In addition to Cory, Kling and Dobkowski, Byron Crump of the University of Maryland was a co-author of the PNAS paper. The research was supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation.
