6 men convicted in attack on Mali's interim leader

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? Six men were convicted Tuesday of attacking Mali's interim leader. Judge Karamoko Diakite told reporters that the court had condemned them to six months in prison.

The six were part of a mob that broke into the office of Interim President Dioncounda Traoe on May 21, and beat him until he lost consciousness. Traore was evacuated to France and did not return until July, throwing the country's transition into question.

All six men belonged to organizations that support Capt. Amadou Sanogo, the leader of the March 21 military coup which overthrew Mali's democratically elected government. Although the attack on the interim leader has not been directly connected to Sanogo or to the upper echelons of the army, reporters saw soldiers waving the protesters past the security cordon into Traore's office.
