Microsoft EMET update with new exploit mitigation technology

I have reviewed Microsoft?s Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit a few days ago here on Ghacks and have found it to be an excellent security program. The software basically mitigates several popular exploitation techniques, making it an effective last line of defense tool when a PC running Windows is attacked with vulnerabilities that are not known or at least not fixed yet.

What makes EMET special is not only the program?s mitigation techniques, but also that it ships with an easy to use program interface. Even inexperienced users can use the program to add extra protection to their system, and while they sometimes may run into issues, it is nothing that can?t be easily fixed with a few clicks of the mouse button.

Today, Microsoft is making available a technology preview version of EMET 3.5 which incorporates a new exploit mitigation technique that mitigates Return Oriented Programming (ROP) attacks. The following definition has been taken from Wikipedia.

Return-oriented programming (also called ?chunk-borrowing ? la Krahmer?) is a computer security exploit technique in which the attacker uses control of the call stack to indirectly execute cherry-picked machine instructions or groups of machine instructions immediately prior to the return instruction in subroutines within the existing program code, in a way similar to the execution of a threaded code interpreter.

Because all the instructions that are executed are from executable memory areas within the original program, this avoids the need for direct code injection, and circumvents most measures that try to prevent the execution of instructions from user-controlled memory.

The technology that Microsoft has implemented into the technology preview was submitted by one of the contestants of the company?s BlueHat Price challenge. The EMET team added four checks into the program to help prevent attacks using ROP techniques.

Installation and use

The Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit 3.5 Tech Preview can not be installed on systems that run other versions of EMET. A prompt is displayed on those systems that is informing users that the current version needs to be uninstalled before the tech preview can be installed. Since it is a tech preview, it is not recommended to install it in a productive work environment. It is also recommended to export the current configuration using the file menu for backup purposes.

When you start EMET 3.5 for the first time you will notice that Microsoft has added tabs to the application configuration window. You can still display all mitigation techniques in a single tab, or use the memory, ROP or other tab to configure specific features.

Closing Words

Microsoft seems very dedicated when it comes to EMET and it may only be a question of time before the program gets integrated into the Windows operating system in one way or the other. For now though, Windows users need to download, run and configure it separately. Should they? Yes, definitely.

Ghana president dies after illness, successor sworn in

Ghana President John Atta Mills died suddenly Tuesday, hours after being taken ill and months before he was to seek re-election in a country seen as a bastion of democracy in west Africa.

The 68-year-old Mills, who oversaw the start of large-scale oil production in Ghana in December 2010, had recently traveled to the United States for a medical check-up. His cause of death was not given.

In accordance with Ghana's constitution, Vice President John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as president before an emergency session of parliament, pledging to maintain stability as he serves out the remainder of Mills' term.

"I wish Ghanaians to be assured that all is well," the 53-year-old who has also served as communications minister and recently published a memoir said. "We are going to maintain the peace, unity and stability that Ghana is noted for."

He declared a week of national mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast.

Mills died in a hospital in the capital Accra while receiving treatment, his office said. While the cause was not specified, he had shown signs of illness, including recently losing his voice and a gradual loss of weight.

His recent visit to the United States was officially for a routine medical check-up.

There were unconfirmed reports in local media that he had suffered throat cancer, while false rumours of his death had also previously spread.

Presidential elections are set for December in a country seen as a rare example of a stable democracy in west Africa and which recently joined the ranks of the world's large-scale oil producers.

Mills was to be the ruling party's candidate after fending off an unprecedented challenge for the nomination.

Condolences poured in for the late leader, including from US President Barack Obama who chose Ghana for his first visit to sub-Saharan Africa as president in 2009.

"President Mills tirelessly worked to improve the lives of the Ghanaian people," Obama said in a statement.

"He helped promote economic growth in Ghana in the midst of challenging global circumstances and strengthened Ghana's strong tradition of democracy."

West African leaders, including those in Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Togo, also paid tribute to Mills, while UN chief Ban Ki-moon praised his "statesmanship."

The capital Accra was sombre, with activity slowing and residents gathering in the streets to discuss the news.

Emmanuel Bombande, executive director of the the Accra-based West Africa Network for Peacebuilding, said "people have a lot of faith in the Ghananian constitution", adding that he trusted the transition would be an orderly one.

"It was a total surprise, although ordinary people knew that the president had not been 100 percent well," he said, mentioning Mills' recent trip to the United States. Bombande called the late president "a man of integrity".

Pindana Mohammed, a market trader in the capital, said he was shocked by the news which he heard on the radio.

"I am not a supporter of the ruling government, but I respect so much the president because of the way he carried himself," he said.

Mills took over as Ghana's president in January 2009.

He narrowly won the vote in 2008 with a less than one percent margin against a candidate from the party of incumbent John Kufuor, widely respected for having bowed out following his two terms in office.

In July last year, Mills was nominated to be the ruling National Democratic Congress party's presidential candidate for the December 2012 elections.

The primary represented the first time in the country's history that a sitting president competed for his own party's nomination.

Mills beat his only rival in the party primary, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, the wife of ex-military leader Jerry Rawlings.

Mills rose to prominence in 1997 when Rawlings named him vice president -- a position he held until the former coup leader-turned-elected president made way for Kufuor after the 2000 elections.

After finishing his law studies in Britain, Mills came home to teach law for 25 years at a Ghana university.

Ghana, a country of some 25 million people, recently joined the ranks of the world's large-scale oil producers.

The country has begun producing oil from its offshore Jubilee field, one of the largest discoveries in West Africa in recent years. The field's operator Tullow has estimated that the field's recoverable resources amount to up to one billion barrels.

Did shooting suspect send plans to doctor?

AURORA, Colo. (Reuters) - The man accused of Friday's movie theater massacre in Colorado mailed a notebook "full of details about how he was going to kill people" to a University of Colorado psychiatrist before the attack, FoxNews.com reported on Wednesday.

The package allegedly from the suspected shooter, 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes, remained unopened in a mailroom for as long as a week before its discovery Monday, FoxNews.com reported, citing a law enforcement source.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report but was seeking to do so. Messages left with police in Aurora and other law enforcement officials involved in the case were not immediately returned.

The FoxNews.com report said Police and FBI agents were called to the University of Colorado Anschutz medical campus in Aurora on Monday morning after the psychiatrist, who is also a professor at the school, reported receiving a package believed to be from the suspect.

?

Although that package turned out to be from someone else and harmless, a search of the Campus Services' mailroom turned up another package sent to the psychiatrist with Holmes' name in the return address, the source told FoxNews.com.

After obtaining a search warrant, police took the package away and discovered its contents.

FoxNews.com quoted its source saying: "Inside the package was a notebook full of details about how he was going to kill people. There were drawings of what he was going to do in it - drawings and illustrations of the massacre."

Police say Holmes, wearing body armor, a gas mask and toting three firearms, opened fire on a crowded midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in the Denver suburb of Aurora, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.

Holmes, who was arrested immediately after the attack outside the theater, made his first appearance in court on Monday. Authorities plan to formally charge him on July 30.

Big law honour | Your community newspaper in Guelph, Ontario

A former Guelph resident who is a longtime Kenora lawyer has won Legal Aid Ontario?s highest honour.

Peter Kirby, who has practised family and criminal law in the Kenora area for 34 years, is the sixth person to receive the Sidney B. Linden Award since its inception in 2005. Named after a judge who was the first chair of Legal Aid Ontario?s board of directors, the award honours people who have demonstrated a commitment to helping low-income people and have given their time and expertise towards ensuring access to justice.

Kirby, who attended Guelph Collegiate, is one of the sons of the late John Kirby, a general surgeon in Guelph, and his wife Mary, also deceased, said Jim Schroder, a relative who still lives in Guelph.

?I can?t think of anyone who should get that award more than Peter,? Schroder said Friday.

Legal Aid Ontario?s website says Kirby was the driving force behind the development of the Kenora Community Legal Clinic. Among other things, it says, he?s a regular speaker at events that advocate for ?preventative and rehabilitative measures and oppose punitive sanctions.?
