RIVERBEND IN CONTENTION FOR STATE GOLF TITLE

GROUP AAA TOURNAMENT
The Riverbend golf team sits in fourth place, five strokes behind Mills Godwin after Monday?s first day of the Group AAA state tournament at Red Wing Golf Club in Virginia Beach.
Mills Godwin shot a 298 to hold the lead ahead of Chantilly (300), Battlefield (301) and Riverbend (303).
James River?s Jason Park leads the individual tournament with a first-day score of 68. Michael Mead Jr. and Andrew Mueller were the top scorers for Riverbend, the Northwest Region runner-up, each carding a 75.
Devin Oeters added a 76 and Sameer Abdel-Qadar a 79 for the Bears.
Play concludes today at the Virginia Beach golf course.
GROUP AA TOURNAMENT
Culpeper is tied for third after Monday?s first round of the Group AA state tournament at Lakeview Golf Course in Harrisonburg.
The Blue Devils (315), tied with Tunstall, trail leaders Salem (304) and Lord Botetourt (313) after 18 holes, with Spotswood (316) sixth.
Culpeper?s Charlie Peavley and Johnnie Mealia both shot 76 and are tied with five others for 13th place in the individual tournament. Lord Botetourt?s Justin Nichols and Drew Lagan of Cave Spring were tied for first after carding 72s.
J.P. Gorby shot 81 and Jacob Kirby 82 for the Blue Devils, who will conclude play in the tournament today.
FIELD HOCKEY
KING GEORGE 2, SPOTSYLVANIA 0
Mia Meyer had a goal and an assist to help King George get a Battlefield District home win.
Meghan Yanchulis also scored and Jackie Collins added an assist, while Shelby King, Liz Hill and Lucy Shippee played solid defense for the Foxes, who host Caroline on Wednesday.
JAMES MONROE 6, CULPEPER 0
Hannah Fisher scored three goals to help homestanding James Monroe get a Battlefield District win.
Miranda Rigg, Cleo Morris and Sarah Frank each tallied once for the Yellow Jackets (11?1), who visit Collegiate Tuesday in Richmond.
CHANCELLOR 9, COURTLAND 0
Chelsea Galera and Kate Colley scored three goals each to lead Chancellor to a Battlefield District win on its home field.
Katherine Hull added a goal and an assist, while Chloe Fernandez, Greer Trainham and Jordan Rasure each scored once for the Chargers (11?2, 11?0), who visit Eastern View on Wednesday.
EASTERN VIEW 6, CAROLINE 0
Chandler Moison and Jasmine Smith played well for visiting Caroline in a Battlefield District loss to Eastern View. The Cavaliers (1?13, 0?11) host King George on Wednesday.
FOXCROFT 3, FREDERICKSBURG CHRISTIAN 0
Cat Reynolds scored twice and Olivia Johnson once in visiting Foxcroft?s Delaney Athletic Conference win against Fredericksburg Christian. Alex Brace (two) and Johson had assists.
Goalie Bridgitte Root had eight saves for FCS (1?4), which visits Wakefield on Friday.
VOLLEYBALL
CULPEPER 3, KING GEORGE 1
Lea Howard had 20 assists, three blocks, three kills and two aces for King George, but Culpeper earned a 25?19, 20?25, 25?23, 26?24 Battlefield District win.
Amber Smith had eight kills and two blocks, Alli Trainum had six kills and three aces and libero Lauren Howard totaled 17 digs for the Foxes (6?7, 2?5), who host Eastern View Tuesday.
